***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Robin & Bill,

The goose and gander made so much noise today that I let them spend a few hours with the ducks. They walked around together for about three hours, used the pool, ate a bunch of something they found under John's old Ford truck, and slept in clumps under the trees in the side yard. When I needed to go in, I herded the ducks back to their pen and the geese back to theirs. Everyone was happy. I think I'll do the same thing tomorrow if the weather is nice. They won't be able to stay out as long, though, since I need to put birds in cages for the Coweta sale.

yep, i am sure they enjoyed there walk about- they eat some mystery stuff, have seen the ducks chase frogs- which is hysterical to watch.... glad they seem to be settling in-

Quote: too funny about the roosters, i have gone up to see what they are calling the ladies to, and figure it must be imaginary cuz all i see is dirt or a blade of grass
Quote: ok, these hens took up all the nest boxes, so am thinking i'll shift them, into their own enclosure in the coop, i noticed one of them tonite is congested, gave her tylan, will it be safe to have her with the other hens and babies if she is sick? the eggs are dated from may 1- 7, each one went broody a couple days apart- so i finally just gave each hen a couple eggs, and have collected the new eggs daily, hope no one else gets broodyitis

I had goat once many years ago and I remember it was DELICIOUS!
Can't say I have ever had goat much less smoked goat. I might try it one day. We do a lot of smokin at our house. We have done deer and then we used the smoked deer in chili, it was excellent!!! I never really ate deer before we had that.

Good evening all, I have been so busy the last few days it is all I can do to just keep up with reading, no time to post at all. I lost a whole nest of eggs and one chick a broody was hatching yesterday. It was a snake, one of the biggest I have ever seen out here. Of course I had to be the one that found it leaving the nest. I don't think I will sleep for days! Hubby laid it out after shooting it and it was easily over 7 ft long. At least now it will not get any longer by eating my eggs! We had been losing eggs each day and were looking for the snake. Just had a feeling that is what it was. I will be picking up Sulfur and deer netting this weekend hoping to keep them in check.

I love the chicken pictures on here the last few days! Boy you guys are going to get me in trouble. Everytime i see these beautiful birds I find a new breed I want. Hubby is ready to shoot me!

Quote: I have owls and hawks both in my woods here at different times of the year I've found two owls dead in my pond over the years I'm guessing they were after something and didn't see the water till it was too late, I imagine that's how this owl got caught, swooping for something and not seeing the wire. As far as I know I've never lost a bird to either one of these hunters here but the dogs in the area have had the greatest impact on my birds, My next door neighbor's great dane got ahold of my big gander and injured it's wing on the end, Goosey has taken full advantage of it being hurt and has taken his woman away from him, He is going to be just fine no broken bones just skinned the end section of his left wing, Not sure how to help him till he stays away from Goosey long enough to keep from getting whuped on. I am not a fan of great danes any more I used to think they were smarter than a lot of dogs till I met this one next door attacking my goose isn't the only reason I don't like this dog, I try to work in my yard and the dog won't stop barking at me if I'm out there for 10 hours the blasted thing is still barking, When I've had all I can take I get the gun and fire a shot (not at the dog) and the sound makes it stop for a while (although I really want too) Anyway I'm getting some more Buff O pullets from a friend that is losing them to a hawk that has killed several already, I thought it was allowed to kill them to protect your livestock?

Elwood, I understand what you mean. I have a Great Dane and was raised around them. My parents used to show danes. Unfortunately lately they have become more popular and I have come across several that are not right in the head. One person in the Shawnee area even started breeding danes with pitbulls. I have nothing against pits but I would not want those two mixed together. If for some reason you find one that is unstable that is an awfully big dog to control!!

So today we learned that barb wire fencing catches owls & deer netting catches snakes.

Also found out that Porter Hill will no longer have a poultry auction. Just a misc household auction on 1st & 3rd Fridays @7. It can be removed from the auction list & so can the Walters auction.

One of my two hens, just a month after the chick was born started laying eggs again! It is every other day, but it is something. If the same happens for the other hen, it will be two more weeks. The only problem is that this second hen (Sue) does not hang out with the rooster as Henny Penny does. Just happy to know I dont have to buy eggs at the store for some time. Wonder when these hens will go broody again...

I never have thought of Danes as being very smart. More like goofy, but big hearted. I've been hearing that a lot about backyard breeders turning into a serious problem, apparently there's a new version of dane out there called a euro? Some of the pics I've seen look kinda pitish, so I bet that's why, apparently they are $$$. Both danes I've had have serious seperation issues, we had one destroy a wood door leading into our garage the first couple of days we had her, just shredded it, and the new one barks constantly. Just stands at the door barking to be let in. I'm finally beginning to tune it out, it was hard tho after living in the city for so long and being worried about animal control! I love the breed tho. Something about the big goofballs just makes me smile. I would love to have one from a pup, both I've had have come with serious baggage

Ok fellow peeps. I am now looking for a LF Black Cochin Rooster. If u hear anything of anything let me know please. I decided to change jobs, after 61/2 yrs of working 12 hour days in a very physical job. Decided that the big $$$$ was not worth the lost time. i gues it is just another step in simplifing my life. Now I can finally focus more on my birds and land. Is that actually simplifing?
