This thread sure is hard to keep up with-- miss two days and I'm about 200 posts behind! I didn't read everything, but I sure do enjoy following everyone on here.

Okieridge, I hope you catch your snake. Tell that varmint that those eggs have my name on them and I'm not willing to share! LOl I really appreciated the eggs the other day. They are in the incubator and on their way. I got a new (to me) incubator Thurs. and am anxious to fill it up. It has a 216 egg capacity and is miles ahead of those little styrofoam jobs I've been using. But, the good thing is that I've figured them out to the point of getting about a 90% hatch rate with good eggs, so this new one should be a cakewalk.

Went to the sale at Perkins yesterday and it was pretty sad. Chicks were only bringing from about $.30 to $1.25 for bigger ones fully feathered for standard breeds like barred rocks or rhode island reds. Marans brought a fair amount, but not nearly what I've seen them sell for. Big roosters only brought between $1 and $3.50. It was not a good day to sell.

I came home to 29 out of 31 eggs hatched in the little incubator. I had two of my grandkids here this weekend and they were so excited to get to see baby chicks hatching. My granddaughter would go check about every 20 min. Friday evening and she would come out excited that another one had zipped or hatched out. She learned some chicken terminology this weekend and my 6 yr. old grandson told me he is going to be a chicken farmer when he gets big.

Something got into one of pens last night and killed 8 of my youngsters. One of them was completely torn apart, but the rest were all intact. When I went out this morning I thought the rain had did them in because there were a couple laying out in the pen. But, when I checked in their little coop, there about 5 in there and that's where the torn up one was. The opening into their "box" is only about 6 or 8", so it couldn't have been anything big. Of course, whatever it was got some of my best LF cochin chicks. I had one that was a beautiful dark blue and its feathers were all laced almost black. Prettiest blue cochin I've ever seen and it was definitely slated for the breeding pen. Of course, it was one I lost. I felt like sitting down and crying, but tears have never solved anything that I could see. I just can't figure out what it could have been. All of my pens are inside a bigger enclosure with 6' chainlink fencing with solid metal sheeting around the bottom. I have shade cloth over the top, but I guess whatever it was could have climbed over and squeezed between it and the fence. I just don't know what would have torn only one up like that and left the rest. I am totally bummed right now, at any rate. I guess now I'm in the market for more blue and black cochins.

Jim,
do you want to try to figure out a chicken train? If someone in this area is headed Jim's direction I would like to check with Sooner too to see if she is ready for a few birds for Madison.. I do need to thin a bit.

The Golden and Blue Golden Birchen will be very nice there is some discussion about begining showing them as new varieties these will be well worth that effort or excellent additions to Birchen / Silver Blue / Brown Red / Lemon Blue breeding programs. Nothing like being able to get four colors from 1 mating and all nice birds.
Here's what I need to know. What size are they???? I can pull together a train or I will be up there in July 14th. You would have to meet them at the casino & I need numbers before I can work it out........

works for me. if someone is coming this way or going that way we can do that im sure.

Jim where do you live? I was thinking Wagner? Hubby will be going to Springfield,MO on Thursday if Carl could get the birds here by Wednesday hubby can get them to you. He can meet you off the turnpike maybe near the Hard Rock (he thinks there is a quicktrip off the road there) on the east side of Tulsa, or something I am sure you know where good meeting places are up that way. We are more than happy to bring them up that way. He said he plans on leaving here at around noon on Thursday he hopes to leave earlier but it may be as late as noon. So if you and Carl can work it out to get them this far we will get them to east of Tulsa for you. We can swap cell #'s so you all will know better what time for sure to meet. He will be in my car but banties are small so they should fit easily, lol.
that would work, i work in the tulsa area.

pm sent

Only thing that might be hard is that she usually comes during the week not on Wed, but will see if maybe she would come on a Tues eve.......not sure.

Mitzi I was the same way until recently. It is taking way to long to feed and I really have my breeders picked out so I decided this week to part with anything I could that I didn't 'need'. I sold over 60 birds (25 were chicks). But it was so liberating to go out this morning and see the pens less crowded. I hated looking into grow out pens and see 3-5 roos that I just couldn't use. I will sell more chicks this week and trying to talk Jackson into selling a few of his banty cochin chicks since his little pair has an almost 100% hatch rate we will soon be over run with banty cochins if I'm not careful! LOL

Ocean, that picture could sell anyone on piggies!!! CUTE!! I think they are cute in pics but terrified of them. We had a wild one come up to our house shortly after we got married. It cornered me on the porch and then once I got into the house it laid down against the door and wouldn't let me out. Nope I don't do pigs or geese!

noone is like mitzi, and never will be!

wird sale friday night, light on the "merchandise" part of the sale, a little lighter on the chicken part.

big roosters were bringing 10 bucks each, or a buck fifty each.

nice looking hens were only getting 10 bucks at the top end.

pigeons went from 2 bucks to 10 bucks.

chicks went from quarter to 2;50 each.

then the weird part realy kicked in, bantam mixxed breeds were bringing 6-7 bucks a head, pures were going for 1-2 bucks for a few, then it hit.

old english cockerals brought 10 bucks each for yard birds. pairs were going for 10-40 for so so birds, then the last pair of so so's came on the table and went for 64 bucks! wish they had been mine!

week to 2 week old ducks brought 4-6 bucks each. then my big ducks it the table, when it was over i was embaressed but happy, pairs were 34, trio was 72.

some people shouldnt be allowed to bid at auctions, all these people bidding big, and i bought a peacock for 30 bucks. weird huh.
