***OKIES in the BYC III ***

lost our runt duck last night :( Looks like he got his head stuck under the frame of the little coop. Not sure if he did it or he had help. His whole head and neck feel like they'd been slobbered on, but no damage, thinking maybe one of the dogs slobbered all over it after it died, maybe. *sigh*
Sounds like a snake that couldn't eat it.

for those interested- this is a good article on respiration issues- i for one will do what i can to give a bird a fighting chance, just how i am...

i've heard recently about denagard- sounds like something to keep on hand
Thanks for this, artsyrobin. It's good to have on hand and I completely agree with you about doing everything possible to give my birds the best possible care.

the piglets are doing good, but one is gorging so bad on the milk that she can't hardly walk after she's eaten, I see now why they call people pigs when they eat too much :p
I'm sorry about your little duck, Laura :-( I've read many times what Sooner said about snakes leaving the slobber all over them. They try to swallow them and can't so spit them out.
I gave up on building "chicken pens" and now have started building "chicken yards". There's several big shaded areas under trees around here, we're going to fence 30' x 50' and 50' x 50' chicken yards under each set of trees. Another project that'll give me something to work on all summer, it'll keep me young. And tan. But then I can have a BBS Cochin yard, a Silver Laced Cochin yard, BBS Ameraucana, Araucana, & LF and Bantam Faverolles. Big plans for someone who's only had birds for a year. What happened???
We're looking for one of those post hole diggers that goes on a tractor because the areas where I want to put their yards is filled with tree roots. Is that how you all dig through tree roots?
Oh yea-I meant to add I'm not going to breed the birds, I'm no good at placing them. But if people want eggs from them I'll gladly share.

. . . . . . Hopefully the tomatos and peppers fair better. I need hubby to mix up some spray for those. Dad always used tobacco juice, ceyanne pepper juice, garlic and a tiny bit of dawn dish soap (to make it stick to the plants better) to spray the plants down to help with bugs. We used it last year but with the heat we didn't get much from the garden.
You really shouldn't use tobacco products around tomatoes. It can spread mosiciak (can't spell it) to them.

hey tony, hows the dog working out for you?

has anyone used vinegar to clean the coops with, been reading how it kills bacteria and is used as a disinfectant....

I haven't used it in coops I use Oxine in there but I do use it in the house with a little bit of lemon juice added. It works great! For a scrub to get rust off counter tops or the bath for hard water marks add salt and lemon to it to make it abrasive.

Mitzi since you are not into breeding your birds & only want them as pets why not just do a large pen or 2? Most of our birds stay in the lean too of the barn & it cuts chores down drastically!

I have used vinegar based recipe for window cleaner & as fabric softner. Never used it to clean my coops though.

The layers are all together, I guess I hadn't considered doing it that way because then I'd have the roosters all together in with the hens. Would all those roosters get along? There'd be like 5 or 6. How many boys do you have? I do have a game cock of some mixture (Spoc) in the layer's yard and he tolerates the 2 Silkie boys just fine. Which is odd because he won't put up with any other males. Hmmmmm.....that might very well be the way to do it with the ones that are babies right now. I don't want want to mix the Fav boy and grown Cochin boy with the babies though. But all the babies really could grow up and live together, couldn't they??? You might be onto something. Back to my drawing pages!
