Here are some pics from today before it started raining of the new recycled coop we are building. It is not finished yet, but we've made quite a bit of progress on it.
This wall faces south. It has an automatic chicken door made from a car antenea motor (don't even ask me how Gary my electrician husband has told me many times and my eyes just glaze over and I hear the charlie brown teacher speaking!) The glass was removed from the people doors and replaced w/ hardware cloth, every bit of wood was repurposed from pallets or a remediated house. The blocks/bricks in the foundation are also repurposed. The roofing paper is new, but the wood in it is recycled. The door you see on the lt side is propped open temporarily, it will have hardware and is on hinges for opening during summer and closing during winter. The two doors are incase we need to split the coop/flock. We don't need to right now, but we will have the option if needed.
This wall faces west, it will have two doors that open like the one in the pic, on the west side and east side for maximum ventilation in the summer, but can be closed or mostly closed in the winter. The vent at the top will always be open even in the winter. The pallets inside are temporary roosts as we plan on letting the chickens in this week before it is complete, mostly b/c of the huge ventilation differenc in this coop and their current coops.
This wall faces north, there are no large ventilation openings and the window in the door is in tact, not removed and replaced w/ hardware cloth. This was going to be the garden tool storage side that was going to be open air wise to the coop side, but not accessable to the chickens, but we have decided to make it all coop and repurpose the two coops we currently have for tool storage.
This side faces east, it will be the same as the west facing wall, there will be two doors hung horizontally that can be open and shut for maximum ventilation
The only thing we had decided before gathering the supplies was the size, everything else was decided based on what supplies we found. I am trying to make up my mind if I want to paint red and white (barnesque) or several pastels Dr. Seuss"esque".
