***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Nana, how SAD those geese lived that way?? The lady really should've known better :-(

Poco, THANK you for the awesome map! Please don't let me forget to talk to you about "neutering" for me lol It's worth a lot to me because they're my pets and it kills me to have to part with them because there's too many males. I don't hatch out very many.

Does anyone remember Molly Shannon from Saturday Night Live? She played Mary Catherine Gallager in a movie called "Superstar", Her character was hilarious, a catholic school girl. Well all through the movie she kept saying "Supa' Staaaa!!" and spreading her arms wide and throwing her head up in the air lmao!!! That's what this chick reminded me of. He was literally *born with a 3 rowed pea comb so I'm betting he's all boy.
Still only have the 5. Super healthy, fat and strong but I have no idea why the other 8 didn't hatch. That's all Carl got from the shipped I gave him to hatch, too, so maybe something about being shipped possibly causes them to die those last 3 days. I know those are the important days.
I remember the movie. The pose in the photo is perfect!

he also told me that day 1 though day 7 is where they are most fragel this is one of the mane resons you i candel for the first time on day 7 and 95% of the time anny chicks that are gowing and look good at day 7 will make it to lock doun

chicks that start but dont make it out of the shell is usualy caused by humidaty or heet isuse

I can't believe it. I'm done building the new coop. It's all done! I'm sweaty, exhausted, cranky and I look like a wild woman with my hair all pulled out, but it's done! I'll put up pictures later tonight. Gonna move chickens around tonight so I'll take some then. Never been so tired I couldn't even take pictures, but I sure am today. I even stopped taking progress pics of construction because I was just so sick of doing a step and stopping, doing a step and stopping. Man, I am never gonna take my husband's support for my chicken hobby for granted again. I didn't realize how HARD it would be doing it by myself. We planned to rebuild our flock this year and we had some plans for constructing stuff, then right after we started this coop, he got a torn rotator cuff. Well, we already had chickens and they needed a place to live. Already had ticks just waiting for me to get some guineas to eat 'em. Already had eggs in the bator that had to brood somewhere, so I just had to keep on track. Called and begged a friend to help me with a couple things that I just couldn't do on my own, and my husband did hold some odds and ends for me while I hammered in nails, but other than that, it's been all me. New coop, brooder, and bantam ark all this spring. Now I just wanna find a hot tub and crawl into it for a few hours. Not gonna happen. Too much to do. Anyway, I'll post pictures tonight. Don't y'all fall over or nothing, but I actually *gasp* bought supplies for this coop.

Don't worry though. There's a few special odds and ends that I found and incorporated into the design.

Edited to add: KSane, after tonight I'll have space for those guinea keets! Okieridge: Likewise on the baby chicks. Any pips or peeps yet?

Good to see you on here Jim, how has everything been? I have been so dang busy haven't had time for anything. I assume all is good there?
worked on pens till this tuesday, got too hot twice last week and dont remeber a whole lot of that week.

you got my envelope didnt you? sent it last tuesday. well couple days after i was there tuesday anyway.

got no idea how many birds i got around here, WAY more than i need!

if you ever want to have fun, try grinding 300 lbs of feed in a hand corn grinder! i actually have it down to a science now, just takes 4-5 days to do it!

very happy with the results.

want me to say hi to your brother saturday? mabey give your sis in law a hug for you?

you know i am always willing to help ya out there buddy!

I have lots of garden work to do, but am home from work not feeling well. The most I will get done today and it may take me all day is some harvesting. My brother brought me over a couple of gallons of fresh cow milk (he has a family member that gives it to him and they won't use it b/c it is not pasturized) so I'm going to make a batch of yogurt and custard and some butter from the cream.

So sorry you haven't been feeling well...allergies are horrible this time of year...but whole milk for yogurt!!

A friend called to ask if I would take them or if I knew someone who would. Said her son's little boy couldn't keep them anymore. She was trying to find a good home for them rather than seeing them go to a shelter. She couldn't believe they bought them and then didn't teach him how to take care of them either. I've had them since Sunday. Had to use a tiny syringe to remove liquid from the hock joint today because it was so swollen. Actually got 1.5 cc of liquid out. She is on antibiotics now for the knee and has been showing a slight fever. She curls up in your lap and looks at you with her little brown eyes...just melts my heart. Babie is bigger and more assertive, but foloows you around like a puppy.

acording to what DR BRAMWELL told me "profesor of poulty science at the UofA " fatality in chick between day 17 and day 21 is due to the hatching methods and not the eggs themself

Cool! We'll meet up after NEOCS if you want and you can have em'.
The 3 Guineas that showed up are gone so I guess they went back to where they came from. I can hear a big group of them back behind us and I bet that's where they came from.

How about a big ole okie hug for the brother and a hug and kiss for sis.. I sure do miss them something terrible. I've been so dang busy haven't checked the mail that has been Steph's job so I will ask her. I'm not too worried about it anyway.
I'm glad I dont grind my own feed but could be a good mixing technique although I think I would just use an old concrete mixer.

Better yet, just slap them both in the back of the head and tell them its from me.. That will be much more believable..
