***OKIES in the BYC III ***

As most of you know and for those who don't I am a Scrapper, scrounger, recycler, make doer!!! I use what I can get for free or cheap!!! Most of my chicken pens are made from pallets used tin and used wire, I go through a lot of baling wire and pick up rusty nails at auctions when i can, I just wanted to let some of you in on some of my secrets!!! i find that the best places to find FREE Pallets, big and small are at window places, glass repair place, motorcycle and lawnmower sales places, and mattress and furniture sales places!!! Most of them are glad for you to haul them off, and some of the large ones can be used as a frame already made for a cage or can be taken apart ( I use a Sawsall with a meta/wood blade and cut between the joints thru the nails!!) As for tin and wire, I get most of mine for hauling it and other stuff off for free!! I get a lot of old torn down 2x 4 welded wire fencing, sometimes I have to cut out pieces and patch it or put the door there, I also haul off appliances for people and use the grills from fridges and stove for cage doors!! I salvage out the rest of what is metal and sell it for scrap!!! I have some pics posted in my profile pics but can't remember how to post from my pics since they changed everything on here!!!! Hope this helps some, Lynn

Me too Lynn! I am not near as good at as you but I try and gab anything off the side of the road if I think I can use it. I picked up five railroad ties and several pallets a few days ago.

Most of the time double yolk eggs don't hatch and it they do, the chicks rarely survive.
Just want to say thank you to you and cathie for the links and advice. I will let her do this one bc some times kids have to try some thing for them selves. Not all eggs will hatch a chick and thats a part of life. This will be a great way for her to learn and ask questions as they come up.

Hurrah! Someone else uses refrigerator grills for doors! I know it looks kinda redneck, but I don't care. I just love how strong they are!

k this is a strange question. has any one ever hatched twin chickens befor? my daughter has and egg that she is sure is a double yoker. I have set it and am going to see what happens. Just thought i would ask those that have been doing this a while how it works out.

I saw one thread on here from someone that had a pair successfully hatch from a double yolker, but I think they had to do interventions. It's not impossible, just very, very difficult. I do not know long term outcomes.

Robin, that only comes to 5 cc per gal for treatment and 2 1/2 cc per gallon for maintenance which is half what I've always read to use. I've read and read and have always found Nana's amounts stated in one form or another. Did it help your birds when you used the lesser amount? Since it's raining buckets right now I think it'd be a good time to go read about the stuff some more.
All *8 of the Arauacana that were in lock down pipped and *7* hatched! I have 7 more little tiny rumpless babies! 1 died soon after pipping but the other 7 are all doing great. I have Blacks and Duckwings & the breeder thinks the yellows are probably Wheatens because that's what she's been breeding for. Joe, the 3 pullets I got from you-are they Duckwings? I'm not sure what the color on the double tufted one is called, is that a Duckwing also or a Wheaten? I won't mix the 10 babies with the 3 adults but this'll give me 10 little Rumpless Wonders and that completes my "No Butts Allowed" yard

It feels so lonesome with an empty incubator :-( Is this called withdrawal?
Man oh man! What I'd give for your yard, Okla! It's beautiful and needs to be on the cover of some magazine. I can only imagine the work that went into something like that. I'm lucky to get mine mowed. I wish I had the talent to do what you do.
MacG, I guess me and you posted at the same time.
Nana, yes, the door's going on the left end. After seeing the picture of the pigeon in that coop though I'm wondering if I should go ahead and use plywood instead of 6" wide pickets to side it with.
yes the silvers are silver duckwing and the dubel tuffed one is a black breasted red or BBR

Didn't know that one would cause another to go broody. Sigh...I will go out tonight and see if she is still with the other one and not roosted but she's ripped out her belly feathers too.
