***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Morning everyone : )

I'm prepping the animals for a short separation. We're headed to OKC to celebrate MIL and FIL's 50th wedding anniversary. I'm taking photos of the event, so I need to be sure I've got all my camera batteries charged and my extra lens in its case. I hope MIL made a list of all the group shots she wants. Great grandfather turns 105 next weekend, and he will be in attendance under his own power. He still lives in a retirement home (not assisted living) and insists on walking where he wants to go.

Lost a broodie in the heat yesterday. I hadn't seen her after the breakfast feeding but didn't think anything of it until late afternoon. She has only been on the nest a couple of days, but the heat in the coop turned out to be too much for her. She didn't use the nest, or I would have seen that she was in the coop and moved her. The back of each coop has a big screen door so there is plenty of air traveling in and out of the coops. The intense sun yesterday heated up the little houses, though, and my non broodies spent their day dust bathing and napping outside. Poor little broodie. This would have been her first clutch of eggs to hatch. I'm counting heads today and may even move some nest boxes outside.

Wear a hat and lots of sunscreen today. I think it's going to be another scorcher.

Well back at it this morning. I have come to the conclusion that I picked the very worst time of the year to give up coffee! My poor birds looked at me like I was a horrible mommy for not letting them out in the grass runs today. I felt bad not having time to get them out for a bit. But they have their fenced runs and will get out this evening for a bit. Plus Kurt and I will be putting up a kew dog kennel tomorrow morning so we can move birds around and put the roos out by the garden to eat all the bugs and grass they want!

Everyone take lots of pictures of your auction finds this weekend so I wont have to many withdrawls, lol.

Well I went out by myself and did chores this morning and kinda got over heated, so decided not to go to Guy Rose Auction this morning, will set home under the ac and my fan and do some computer chicken surfin!!! I just can't take the heat anymore, i don't know what I am going to do next week with 100s coming, i am glad Dakota is coming home from Falls Creek today, we will have to put out extra water and ice bottles this week, everyone please take care in this heat!! Stay hydrated and in the shade as much as you can!! Lynn

I have a friend who is wanting to jump into chickens big time. I mean he is thinking about ordering 100 chicks from Murry McMurry to start with. I have already given him some chicks and now he wants more. What kind of advice can I give him such a pen size, broder, etc.

Murry McMurry, has a special right now for straight run Hatchery mix large fowl for $.99/each minimum 25 chicks!!!! I will suggest that he build as big as he can aford with as much shade as possible for summer and ventilation in the house as much as possible along with a good windbreak or solid shelter for winter in Oklahoma, where is your friend located?? He can get some deal right now at auction and at the hatcheries, Ideal has some great deals on their June/ July hatches right now too!!! What kind of chickens is your friend wanting?? Lynn
