***OKIES in the BYC III ***

African geese, support with a 4x4 post with a 2x4 on top like a "t" the expansion would be on the chicken yard.
Sounds great. The African goose is what I think one of ours is....

Wanted to share this for the gardeners on here!!! Lynn

Nicely designed web site and love those flowers!

hope everyone is staying cool, Bill, too funny!!

been out a couple times to water things down, most of the layer flock is hanging out under the porch and on the portch- i have pans of water for them to stand in- haven't lost any yet- being real careful with them- according to old farmers almanac, about mid jult it will cool down to spring temps...
Although I buy a Farmer's Almanac every year....I have yet to find one that can really predict the future.

Found another snake! This one was in the net around the brooders.

My hen had only 2 chicks so I gave her 10 more she was more than happy to call them straight to her and they were all pecking around in the dust like they had always been together.

Hot ... again ... boo. So tired after getting up at 6:00 am to work on converting the storage space into the new critter barn and then find out this afternoon my husband may lose his job at the end of the week. If that happens I don't know how we'll be able to continue keeping our birds.

We won't even be able to keep our bills paid and food on the table let alone buy feed for the birds not to mention our son is starting college in the fall. We spent two years dealing with unemployment and he's only been back to work for a year. I don't think I can do this again. All we can do is keep our fingers crossed that he keeps his job for now. I don't want to give up my animals.

Prayers for your hubby's job situation!

Thanks a lot, Robin

Don't be volunteering me to take 10 huge chickens lol!
She needs someone to take them for keeps, not house them for her. And I don't do adult birds unless I have a yard specifically built for them only.
I feel for you, Jan, really. I was afraid this would happen a few months back when you got them from that auction after having to give up your last group of chickens because of the Homeowner's Assoc rules.

The silkie hen managed to steal 7 keets from the rose comb RIR.
rofl!!!! Go Silkie girl!! TAKE them babies :-D

I was out in the middle of the hot sun setting up sprinkler hoses for all the birds. Joe, you're a genius! It works awesome to use regular old cheap hose from WalMart and poke holes in it wherever you want. I've got a bunch more to put up on the opposite side of the yard where the layers are at tomorrow. I'm ziptie-ing it to the top of the fence lines, works so much that way than laying them on the ground. So everyone will have a mister/sprinkler hose in every one of the yards. It makes it over 20 degrees cooler under the trees with the little sprayer holes shooting out water. I was pretty impressed. It was so horrible hot out the last few days and this is only June. Some of these birds I love dearly and I can't stand the thought of them being miserable or dying in this heat. My Cochins and Faverolles especially aren't very "heat hardy" when it gets to 108.

Ended up with another broodie with eggs today. One of the white cochins decided that Delilah needed help setting her clutch so she has taken over the nest every time Delilah gets out and then won't let her back in the nest. Delilah would sit outside the box and talk to her eggs and beg Carmen to let her have her eggs back. I moved another box in and put 4 of the eggs in with Carmen and Delilah went back into her nest. They are side by side so if they want to switch back and forth they can. Broodies! Got to love em.
Is there a broodie thread about the lengths they will go to hatch? They sure are determined creatures! I keep thinking about Cristina's hen that grabbed the tomato and tried to hatch it.

Oddly enough Ksane, I feel for me too...only thing is I only bought 'em b'cause we thought there would be a normal % of M-F - you know at least one pullet to three cockerels but I think the breeder knew how to sex chicks at hatching and just decided to unload ten roos on someone who wasn't a "real" chicken buyer (someone who buys 40+ birds a night!). So we were saps, BUT my Davey really loved them and they were the last beings he saw before he passed away. So in the long run, it was worth all the shame of being "discovered" in my unlawful activities to have them for the while. I am going to sell my house and move out where I can have "real chickens" like you guys... you'll see... I'll be a real chicken person yet, you'll see...

Buckguy20, you got me worried now of my two broodies. I see the forecast and it does not look promising. And they have water and do not drink it but they are panting. I am going to put Gatorade in their water but dont know how to force to drink!

Quote: I had to screw my door on temporarily. It's a pain to feed and water but at least they are out of the house. So, still a little work to do on the coop but my trio of Red Gingers are in it and seem to be doing ok. Really worried about the heat though. Hope everyone is fairing well.

Greybear, Do you know anyone that has Dom hens or pullets to sell?
I am sorry I don't, I have some nice Barred Doms but I lost one hen and am down to one older one and two daughters from the older ones, I did hatch a few but think I may have one pullet and three cockrels!! LOL I did think art one time Calvin Jackson had some, might hit him or Micheal up!!! Check with Guy also!!! Lynn
