***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Through the years I have noticed that if you want to handle the birds and have calm birds then one thing you should do is to wear nearly the same color of clothing when you go out to take care of them. Remamber that chickens are a prey animal and no matter that they have been domesticated for thousands of years some instincts are there forever.

As with most of us choosing a breed that is right for you takes time and even after raising birds for nearly 30 years I am still finding breeds that I like. It has just been the past five years or so that we have gotten into Oriental Games but the first love will always be the NNs.

I used to take a bucket out in the coop with me along with a cup full of scratch. Sit on the bucket and toss a little scratch as I taked to the birds and pretty soon they were getting up in my lap whether I had treats or not.

Another point that I would like to make too is that not all roosters are mean in fact there is a very small percentage that will get mean. Hatchery stock are more likely to get mean because they have not been as selectively bred as a breeders birds are. My 8yo grandduaghter has been helping me take care of birds and gather eggs since she was about 2 and when she was that young I actually had roosters that were taller then she was. I was always right there with her but the roosters never showed aggression to her. I don't even trim spurs on the boys and some of them are nearly two inches long.

When you are ready for birds I'm sure that those here on the board will help you get fixed right up.
My rooster wasn't mean. He was a barred rock and a sweety. I hated giving him away, but he had a big mouth. Crowing all day long. LOL

morning everyone, sad when mid 90's feel cool....

Quote: i think guineas are awesome- and alot of fun to watch, but i am convinced you either love them or hate them... no inbetween..... and it is absolutely awesome to have one eat out of your hand after 2 years they finally trust me to do that

On the number of nest boxes, mine had 3 for 10 birds but they only ever used one, so I thought I'd outsmart them in the new coop we put one large laying tray that 4-6 birds could sit and lay at a time if they wanted ................................................. now they stand in line for the one spot in the large tray!!!!!

Tomatoes that have done very well so far have been cherokee purple and the flavor is amazing and arkansas traveler, jury is still out on the abu ...... can't remember the full name but they are supose to be heirlooms from the Iraqui desert. Every form of roma's (most were hybrids) have done poorly.

Morning all, glad the 4th is almost here. I am ready to be back in my comfy bed at home at nights and taking care of my birds during the day. Hubby went and checked on everyone yesterday and so far my little pullet that got to hot is still in the house in a brooder. She is limping so not sure but I think she got stepped on by the others once she went down. I told hubby lets see how she is once we get done with fireworks then decide if we need to cull or not. I think if she can hold her own and isn't in pain we will be fine but I can't see letting her suffer if she acts like she is in pain. Right now she doesn't act like she is but I know she is lonely I am considering getting a younger bird and putting it in there with her.

Hubby is ready to get home and start on the new coop addition for the sexlink birds. He loves our Marans because of the dark eggs and the EE's because of the green eggs but he is just in awe over our sexlink pullets and how big of an egg we get and how often. So now I have him on board with them he is more than willing to build me special pens for breeding them. I am planning on selling my Golden Salmon Marans and possibly my wheatons to make more room for them, lol.

Please everyone take care of yourselves in this heat. My bosses husband suffered heat stroke this last weekend and it was over and hour before anyone found him in his truck. Thankfully he had gotten it started and the AC running. Please check on your elders and neighbors as well. Even though the temps should be better this week it doesn't hurt to check on those around us.

The rooster crowing all day and early morning is what my wife is opposed to. Personally I kind of like it but don't want to turn her off to the whole thing before we even get started. I've tried hard to make the coop match the trim on the barn and house and be as inconspicuous as possible. It just seems a waste to have the room for stuff like this and not put it to use.

I was looking last night and I think in the spring I'm going to plant a raised bed garden down one side of the run for vegetables. It shoult provide a little bit of shade and help prevent critters from trying to dig into the run as well. All of this talk about tomoatoes has me already looking forward to next years garden.

My garden this year has done better than anything I've had for the past several years. Between the drought and hail storms I had just about given up on gardening. This time around I am finally getting a good crop of tomatoes and herbs. I have a few other things planted but the tomatoes are what I was really after.

Poco glad you had a good time, 105 wow!!!!! My gma's gma lived to be 113 at least that is what my gma told me and mowed her own grass until 109.

Have been enjoying the early morning hours in the yard and garden. It was still 75 in the shade until 8:30 this morning.
