***OKIES in the BYC III ***

MJ make salsa, sauce, ketchup & many other great things! You will find LOTS of uses for your tomatoes if you have time & space for them. Alexis has been having an inlet everyday with fresh tomatoes. I am not a tomato lover but a carbon tomato on my pizza is YUMMY!!! I do like those carbon, even though they are ugly.
On the corn the variety I am growing has to be isolated, since it is sugar enhanced. Some try isolating with spacing plantings by time, but it is hard to do here in Oklahoma since it gets hot so fast. I did consider growing multiple varieties with different harvest dates. However, harvesting it all at once & putting it up the next day appeals to me since I have so much other garden to tend too.
Picked 3 cantaloupes today that I can't figure out what variety they are, but I don't like them. I remember buying seeds for one that said it had a spicy undertone & it must be that variety. Been searching for the seed packet, but haven't located it yet. First time I can say that I don't like a cantaloupe. Smelled good but taste awful!

I made a giant sandwich with the big carbon you gave me. I really liked it!

When we were kids we had to help put up the sweetcorn. The goal was to freeze enough boxes for a box per week for our family and Grandpa and Grandma's. I can still see the giant piles of ears we kids had to husk and de-silk. Guess what was for dinner on the days we did all that husking, blanching and cutting? Sure was delicious though.

Artsrobyn, I do have her in a crate. I don't have it covered as I wanted there to be good airflow in case heat was the culprit. She has eaten about half of the watermelon and is resting calmly.

That "gurgling" sound is gone now. I'm definitely no expert but it seemed to be something to do with the heat.

Not sure what I'm going to do with her. I can't be home every day to bring her in the house like this. But I can't exactly leave her outside in the heat if she is going to get like this every day.

Hey, all, these are birds Shawn bought from me and I feel terrible about what's happening out there!

I can't imagine it can be much hotter at your house than mine. The only thing I can think is that she had been free ranging, and hanging out in the shade under our trees during the hot part of the day, and was only in the coop for laying, then popping right back out until nightfall. And my coop is hot, I don't have any fans in it (probably should). Other than that, I just don't know. I'm still dying to know if she's laid an egg yet. If she didn't lay yesterday or today, then there could be a problem there. My hens were laying steadily, even in the heat. My remaining five buffs are acting fine, even though they aren't free ranging right now, and four others that I sold are also acting fine.

I don't know what it could be, but I'm anxiously watching everyone's advice and input as well.

Is there a big area of shade where she's at? Where a breeze could get through? Navi mentioned she'd been free ranging before you got her so that would indicate she had multiple areas of shade and a cool breeze. To a bird used to that a small pen with an 8 sq ft area of shade isn't going to cut it and she's going to over-heat. Chances are she spent her days wallowed down in a cool dirt hole by the base of a tree before. Maybe you can exchange her for another one of the black ones that seem to be doing better.

The Aussies have been out in the heat and shade by the coop all this time, so that could be why they're doing better. They're just used to it. I think I've spoiled my buffs a bit. I'd be happy to exchange her for an Aussie, or two. She's a lovely bird, I hope she settles down and does alright for you.

Welcome Shelby. We are guinea lovers here! Even with all their quirks we can't get enough!
Yesterday all my "young" keets that hatched from bird walks eggs insisted on being in the duck cage. They dug a hole when playing in the dirt & made it under the fence that seperates the pens, once they found the duck pond refused to go back to their own pen. They are perching on rocks at the edge of the ducks pool hanging out having a great time. Until the ducks chase them away that is.

For all you zuchinni users, I have been using a mandolin to make zuchinni lassagna noodles for yrs. some how I never thought to use the "French fry" cut to make spaghetti style noodles. Took a few seconds to cut 3 zuchinnis. Of course DD is totally grossed out, but dinner is fresh peppers, garden tomatoes made into marinara sauce & zuchinni noodles with meatballs. Yum yum. It is all simmering now.......

If you have bought coondogs from this area, you just might have bought them from me. I sold out and shut my kennel down about a year ago. I know all the coonhunters around these parts. I bought my Guineas from a lady from Loyal. I think she has about 6 left. Good young healthy birds, and very gentle and tame.. Thanks all for the welcomes..
