***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Well it's done, I had to put the Lil' girl down this morning. She couldn't drink or eat without coughing?sneezing what ever it was she was doing. All birds seem to be taking the heat good, I keep frozen bottles of water in there water bowls. I have put out a Lil' swimming pool for them and they'd rather drink out of it than get in it. Planning on going to pick up 4-more pullets next Sat. My wife says that's not a fair trade, Cull one bird and get 3 extra too take its place. LOL..

Not sure. We've never seen anything around but the little brown bunnies that eat all my lettuce and the neighbors cat, who is fat, sassy and old. Raccoon is most likely i think. Whatever ti was came back last night. I had tided up the yard, IE. putting excess baby bird parts in a plastic bag, which i left tied up on the porch. It was riped open and parts were mostly gone. I'm worried about my big birds now. I usually don't close the coop door and I've seen no evidence of digging around the pen but I'm going to be making some changes there.

Leave another bag of goodies out for it on the porch with a light dusting of flour around. The tracks it leaves in the flour will tell the tale.

I don't know how long you have been in Dover but I miss Meade's watermelon stand that was on the S end of town. The melons he grew rivaled the melons you get from Rush Springs.

And don't forget the Saltwater Croc. LOL

They have lived with all of these critters and have learned to co-exist. Great White gets close? sound the alarm and everyone gets out of the water until it either goes away or is chased away with boats. There are signs warning of the Crocs around pools or rivers where they are but people still fish, boat and generally carry on with their lives. Hey if a body of water can support a 20 foot croc the fishing must be good!
Only I'm not so worried about the great white that they can see, I'm more worried about the one they don't see until it has my leg in it's mouth!!!!! lol lol lol

Actually I don't swim in public water, chlorinated or not, don't wade past my knees, way to many people doing way to many nasty things in public water for my liking!!!!!! And yes I know they put chlorine in it (pools, hot tubs etc....) but there is chlorine in my toilet water too, and I don't put my head in there either.

Does anyone know if there are any grain mills in the Henryetta area (or Muskogee or maybe even Tulsa)?

Kass look under feed dealers in the phone book, in the past many CO-OP grain elevators had feed mills but they are kinda strung out now. I know Johnston Grain has a terminal at Port 33 and I bet they have a mill or terminal in the Tulsa area.

Yep a farm pond with all of the gross little nastys in it is the only place to play on a hot summer's day!!

Buster - I love your egg mobile video. The hens seem happy and healthy.

I went to the Coweta sale last Friday. Prices were inconsistent. Some really nice birds went low and some mediocre birds went high. One never can predict what buyers will offer. This was the smallest group I've ever seen at the Coweta sale, probably because of the heat. I sold a few and bought a trio of barred rock bantams. They have nice barring and will be a lot of fun to have around.

Second cup down. I'd better go finish my morning chores. Have a great Sunday, everybody : )
thanks for coming sumer auction prices are always off but i think for the time of year and the heet most things sold good " way better them most other auction in thise heet/time of year" some was way low and some was a little high those where some beutifull legbars you had by the way thanks for bringing them . there was some nice old english bantam (thanks split socket) and some that where way big and off colored but with all things considered i think things when well

Why is feed going to go up even higher? I do figure I did my part in tightening my feed belt-I hatched out lots of Bantams the past few months. Gotta do what I can to help the economy, ya know.
Christina, my 6 Orloff hens and my 3 Faverolles girls are in together in their own yard & are laying machines in this heat, each one lays an egg every single day. Neither of these 2 breeds are supposed good layers either. Anyone else have breeds that lay particularly well in the heat?
Cathie, I'm sure it's the heat slowing down their laying. Surely their hormones that control laying shut down a bit to conserve their energy in this kind of heat. Molting season is coming up soon also.
BlanchardOk-I'm way excited about my Orloff chicks coming from Ideal this week, too! We can both post pics and pat each other on the back lol

WOW all the pens now have 3/5/or 7 gallon waterers (except the a-frames) and it is making watering time ALOT shorter in the evenings!!! Of course I have to fill 85% of them first thing in the morning and that takes a bit longer than the old water bowls. But we had to fill those several times a day.

Mitzi you must be doing more for your birds than I am-- our electric bill was only $400. But we do get a 20% discount for having our backup generator, so maybe we are almost equal.
Since we began life on the farm we rarely get away more than 24 hours since so much is required. Good to get away but DH has been working so hard he was knocked out asleep early. Us girls have been working hard too, but the stress level at the farm is much lower. Makes a huge difference.

You did the right thing. I honestly wish I had your guts.
