***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Morning everyone..
Just got home from our trip to see mom in California and came home with a chicken.
Our little white Serama is from the Admiral Ice line and in September I have my sights
on a mate from the gal that had Mr. Snowball. Now if only this heat goes away I would be
a happy chicken farmer.
Hope all is well with all of you and dont forget the Oklahoma County Free Fair Aug 23-25th.
Poultry show and handmade entries along with food. Free to enter !

Quote: Getting the bugs helps but getting the eggs is so effective too. You probably have had a bunch hatch.
A new product to me is Viper. Better than Sevin dust and comes in powder and spray. It can be used on chickens cats and dogs. The active ingredient is permethrin methyl. 4 pound bag cost 6.60 at my feed store. I've also resorted to turning the chickens into the garden for the grasshoppers too.

Quote: I love my girls. If you do have an extra rooster, I would be interested. I would like to get some fertile eggs from my girls before they get too old to lay. The two I have left are 4 years old now and still laying a few eggs a week.

Quote: That would solve the shared driveway dispute too.

Glad to hear some folks got rain. We are running water in the garden and on the landscaping plants.
These next two weeks are going to be brutal. I think I'm going to rig up some more shade cloth for the pens. What sunflowers I had growing around the big pen have dried up and offer little shade. Hubby doesn't like my orange drapery material but I still have most of a bolt left and it makes great shade cloth... or maybe I should invest in some of that military camoflage cloth....

morning guys! Cinder made it through the nite and is bright eyed- qm going to keep her and cassie in the house for the day and try to figure out where to put them to make sure they get enough water in this heat...

we got just under 2 inches of rain....
Glad for you, at least someone got some rain!

I found a red velvet ant near my back door today. I thought the chickens would eat it, but NO! Way! They looked at it and turned the other way. Maybe it gives off an odor they don't like? Anybody know? I do know they are actually a wasp and the females only sting but I would have thought it would have been eaten quickly.

I just talked to OSU Avian Clinic and they do caponize chickens

It comes to about $40 per bird (about the same as a cat neuter) but for people who have chickens as pets like I do it's a godsend and I'm really happy about it. I thought of seeing if maybe Poco could do it but that'd be a 4 hr round trip (if she could even do it). Plus I hate to put her out and take up an entire day for both of us and stress the chickens out on such a long ride. The vet school is going to do it next Thursday-in 6 days. I'm going to take in 5 of them then. What a relief! This is the best news I've had in a long long time. I can keep ALL my boys-all of them! She said age doesn't matter, they do all ages. That with older birds it'll take awhile for the hormones to get out of their system.
I'm making an envelope called Nutz No Mo' and am going to start socking away money to do every boy on the place

My 16 yr old son better watch it, too.

Dude! That is so cool! I might consider having it done to my little silkie cochin cross that I want to keep so badly.

NANAKAT, If I do have some extra roosters I will be sure to keep you in mind! I will DEFINATELY let you know the minute I find out if they are roosters!

ummmmm...and just how many boys do you have?

I wonder if the older boys will also turn into good mamas like the younger capons do?

For dinner tonight will be roast turkey, fried okra, roasted garlic potatoes and a tomato-onion-cucumber salad with a vinegrette dressing and frosted fruit and yogurt soft cream for dessert.....yummmmm.

Well i got a couple of drops of rain but nothing to write home about LOL! Hey have any of you ordered Freedom rangers? i am thinking of getting some of these and starting a small broiler flock for meat instead of buying the CX chicks in the spring so any impute would be great from the fellow Okies.

Edited to add that the min order is 25 i don't need that many so if anyone would be interested in going in on an order with me i Live in Bristow and would be glad to split in shares.

That is a female and she has a very potent sting...around here we facetiously call them "cow killers' because the sting is so painful "it could kill a cow".
