***OKIES in the BYC III ***

The new chickens from Buster are home, laid 3 eggs. One is bolder than the rest. Twice it came out talking and walked around the yard. The others are quiet & pecking at the dirt. Lots of people at market looked them over. One lady came worried they were looking stressed, it was just a few minutes after you dropped them off. I am sure they are going to do well here. Several little Young Cockerals have been investigating them & hopefully will teach them how to forage & explore. Thanks so much for picking the birds up, I think they will be able to thrive here.

Glad to hear they are doing so well. They have stressed at my place off and on since I picked them up from Fishers on Monday. I think they were just getting settled a bit when here I stick them in cages again and haul them several miles, so I'm sure that didn't help.

We will be heading up there again in tomorrow to pick up another 120 or so if we can fit them in. Ronnie wants a bunch, so they won't be ALL for me. LOL

Erin, we planted at least a dz different melons from Baker Creek & they have all put on melons. there could be a number of reasons they are not producing.

Buster so far 6 eggs have been collected from the new birds, Taron says we need more of those they lay really good! Hope you have a safe trip.

Yes, they ain't pretty, but they lay up a storm! Even in this heat and after all they have been through. Hard not to get excited about them, especially when you are trying to sell eggs.

Well, I may be picking up more than I said. I just figured cage space that I have and there is room for 170 birds, fit comfortably without crowding. i may be able to get more birds for Ronnie than I thought.

LOL now you are sounding like a bull-hauler, always room for just one more!

Erin that is the link for the goat field day. When the page loads just click the text under the picture of the goat and a new page will come up, roll it down a bit and there you are.

As Christina said there are a lot of reasons that the plants are not producing. The most common being too much Nitrogen in the soil. It makes the plant grow very well and be beautiful but they won't set fruit.

Might be time to do some soil testing of your garden plot. Be a good science project for the kids too.

I bought a pretty fancy soil test kit 20 or so years ago for about 100 dollars and got evil looks from the wife when I ordered it, hey we were raising three kids and that would have been a lot of clothes for them. Anyways I tested the soil and did the amendments and the first year yield increased enough that the kit was more then paid for and over the next five years it increased a little every year until leveling off.

Then of course the economy flattened out and we moved so I could get work. LOL

The boss in Enid had a service where the crews went out and sampled fields and made the needed amendments. We built a soil probe and mounted it on the side of a pick-up and it took a three foot sample. The reason being is that the rain will leach out the top couple of feet and the roots will go down to find the deeper nutrients. So often times with an addition of ag. lime to get the PH under control and a very light application of fertilizer their yield went up over a bushel per acre and their fertilizer costs went way down. Boss made money and so did the farmers, win-win.

As a matter of fact, if I just squeeze two more in per cage...

Sounds like you are increasing your egg production by leaps and bounds. Good layers at (auction) baby chick prices, without the feed for 6 months to make them productive. I want a comparable "deal" on brown egg layers.

Darn! Only 3? I was so careful to check several times a day so they weren't out in this awful heat, I'm sorry :-( I got way too many males from the eggs I had shipped. If anyone wants male Araucanas just holler at me. I'd had 2 placed but she never showed at the meeting place and never called or PM'd me since. The sucky part is most have tails, 2 blacks are double tufted though. And the Splash is real pretty.
