***OKIES in the BYC III ***

What an amazingly beautiful day in August in Oklahoma!!!! Had to get up a little early and call the plumber to come clean out the drain lines ... again ... We still have the old clay pipes and tree roots in this drought seem to just loooooooove drain water. Ugh. But it's done now and I can wash dishes again. Whoo Hoo!! Now the kids and I are gonna go out and let the birds run for awhile in the cool and clean out a couple of more garden beds so they are ready to plant this weekend. I don't think I'd realized how absolutely miserable all this HOT HOT HOT weather has made us. They were complaining at the Olympics in London that is was SO hot and it was 83 degrees. When it's 83 here we all spend as much time as we can outside doing stuff because it's so nice out. Ha!
Wow I wonder if that is what is wrong with the pipes in the "old" end of our house- can flush the toilet once but then we have to wait 15 minutes to flush again, the sink next to it is obviously connected to the problem, we replaced the plumbing to the sink and toilet when we bought the house but had to boot it to the OLD pipes under the house that run to the septic tank.

Well I didn't think I would ever beat my all time most stupid reason for calling an ambulance, which was an "eyelash in my eye", seriously I wish I was kidding. But last night I may have done it, an adult self functioning individual called 911 last night b/c he was "thirsty" I kid you not.

Sheesh, that's crazy. sometimes thre's more to the story. Last weekend my friend who lives alone called 911 because he just didn't feel right. All was forgiven when they discovered he was having chemotherapy and probably had some chemo brain going on and just didn't know what else to do.

So anyone heading to the Blanchard auction sat? Anything really good coming? I keep kickin myself for missing those quail last time... Ahhh well there is always this week! Goin to be hard to not have another one this month - hope to see some fo y'all there and get to meet some more of y'all

Yes, sometimes there are those circumstance that make you think later after you know the rest of the story, well then that makes sense, however that was not the case in this situtation.

I wonder if they are destined to become chicken nuggets. I can't imagine Tyson wanting to add adult birds to their flocks, because of bio-security issues.

That would be my guess, Tyson TV dinners or selling the processed meat for chicken sandwich slices or soups.

MacGuyver, there will be other opportunities for battery cage birds, but only a few more batches from these guys.I noticed three of their barns were empty. One of the owners told me they are being refitted for cage free. This barn will be their last of the caged. They are rotating them out on the regular schedule, but once the building is empty, that is it. It will be redone as well and no more caged birds.

I'm still going to buy them and rehab them, though. They won't be as hard as caged because they know how to move around and peck and things, but they will be still high density with little sunlight, so they will still need help adjusting to the real world. After a year on our place and fully rehabilitated, we will then rehome them for a small fee or give them away at the farmers market.

I can't wait to see it. Mark Gatiss has written some really good stuff for the series. He's written four episodes, some novels, some audio plays. I'm on pins and needles waiting to see what they'll be doing in the series for the 50th anniversary special. I'm keeping all my appendages crossed for a multi-Doctor special with Paul McGann returning. (Oh, please, oh please, oh please, ohplease!)

I take it you like Paul McGann? From your posts I would have never guessed it. LOL

Buster even the free range birds are not much better then the others. Even though the barns have roll-up side curtains since the feeders are inside the building the birds rarely go outside. And they have big beautiful pastures to graze on.

The barns are fully self contained with an egg processing room at one end of them and when it comes time to move them they are moved with a big 4x4 tractor.

We will be there, partly to return Mike D's cages and visit a bit. We might check out the equipment and maybe even a little of the junk, but no birds.

I think we are about full up on those.

Jcatblum, are you finding the shells on these eggs paper thin? I would think a big egg house like that would supply their birds plenty of calcium. Also, Ronnie and I have found a bunch of soft shelled eggs. Wonder if that is stress related from their move from the world they have known their whole lives to this alien planet called Earth.

They should be getting plenty of calcium now, though. We include %5 oyster shell in our Carnegie feed mix and now have a couple of bowls of it around for them to eat free choice.
