***OKIES in the BYC III ***

There are some city folk who don't know anything about where their food comes from but what comes from the store.
Our nephew commented that "you must not have bleached the eggs this week" in reference to our brown eggs.
A friend that does educational bits for the Calif State Fair said he has numerous people who don't know where eggs come from, nor milk. He always has funny stories about crowds of people who gasp when achicken lays an egg or a goat kid nurses it's mom...and the comments that follow the gasps of realization.
Poor teacher may be one of those who doesn't know any better and sounds inexperienced with dealing with comments from her children.
The comments at fairs and shows are rich. I have heard some good ones through the years. I have been often asked about our NNs lack of feathers, most think they are sick.

And there is no better milk then straight out of the cow. People are shocked too when I tell them that you can milk a horse or a pig.

I have a terrible feeling that the two black rat snakes had been feasting now for some time - with them gone, and no other snakes at the moment ..

If you are bringing ducks and chickens I need to meet up with you so I know the good ones to get! I try to get the seramas June brings have a terrible time getting them to lay but I know where they are coming from. I am bringing my little giant bator going to start saving for a "real" one I am terrible at all the hand turning and hourly changing the temp knob to be right.

You could say that.

I would actually join his fan club, the Paul McGann Estrogen Brigade, but I think they're defunct.
I wonder how many of the "Doctors" are still living?

We are pretty lucky in that there aren't any covenants or anything on our place. We're the scary hippies in our neighborhood. Every other place around us is either a McMansion or a super expensive fancy horse farm. The only reason we could afford to live here is that our house was an underground house. They base sale price on homes "of similar architectural style" and I guess most of the other underground houses in OK are in areas where the land costs a lot less.
I know of about half a dozen in our area. Besides, you can't show off your wealth if the house is covered in dirt! Bet it often puts a smile on your face when you think of the cost to heat and cool those other monsters.

There are a few around Cashion there only the entrance door is above ground. Most are built into the side of a hill so they at least have a "proper" looking front. Most of those I've seen are South facing and heat up bad during the summer. I would face mine to the SE if I were to build one. Add a wind generator, a few solar collectors for pre-heating the water and I imagine that the house would pay for itself in no time. In fact if one were to run Pex tubing through the walls, floor and ceiling and add a ground system to heat the circulated fluid it would be very cost effective.

You have to step out of the way when you open a gate or door on our place...you will get stampeded as they run out "en masse".

is still the "green" zone and there are lots of grasshoppers and loads of shade between the beds.
My Miklle Fleur Cochins are the group in the pen connected to the run right now. They really scold me if I am even a little late in coming out and opening the door. My roo, Karl, is such a good leader. He is always alert out in the yard. Molly is the independent one. She sometimes makes it out the door before Karl and roosts, by herself, on the roost by the door at night. They sure do have distinct personalities. My favorite things about chickens is that folks can keep them for so many different reasons and there are so many different kinds. I really enjoy hearing about Buster and Erline's flock though they keep birds for very different reason than me.

Is it an electronic thermostat? I change mine over to a wafer system, in these old drafty trailers they seem to be more reliable. If a wafer system change the wafer. And I'm really too lazy to turn eggs so an automatic turner goes into all of the tabletops I have.

For those that haven't heard, Matt Mallory got 4 life terms and according to the local paper they will run consecutive. Even if he does come up for parole on one the next one will kick in. Barring something else happening he is in the system never to see the light of day again.

Just got back from the vet. Vesta is in excellent health (could have told you that without the vet bill), and her vaccinations are current. She put on her "shy" act for the assistants and the doctor, but as soon as we were out of the exam room she was schmoozing up to the other doggie owners in the waiting room.

We started school last Thursday. I kept my syllabuses and supply lists in a drawer. I don't want to hand them out until the majority of students are satisfied that they will stay put. My English students aren't thrilled about having a research paper due before the end of the first quarter, but they'll thank me in April when school will seem the least important part of their day. I explained that by doing all our tough grammar and usage work first, and then writing what they think is the most difficult paper next, we'll have more time for reading in class, which takes the burden off those who don't like to carry an enormous text book home.

Looks like a nice day. I can tell the chickens appreciate a break from the heat. I hope everyone has a chance to get outside. I'm headed back out with my second cup of coffee to sit and watch my birds. Have a wonderful Saturday!

I'm sure with my luck I'll see him on the yard at work,

Had an interesting morning apparently someone stole an ipad from a person a few miles away from here and the built in tracking system indicated it was in the east end of my trailer house. So I needed to get to the pharmacy before it closed at noon and the deputy says if I leave he was gonna have to call the detective out and get a search warrant, I am not the best housekeeper and that was the only thing I had to hide but he agreed to let me leave if I didn't have the ipad on me and he searched my truck to make sure it wasn't in it, When I got back he had more deputies there and I let them look around in my house and they were satisfied with that I guess, I had tried to explain that it was unlikely it being in my house since the reason I don't own a cell phone is you can't get a signal in my house and a tracking signal in an electronic device would be about as useful, I think he thought I was lying about not getting a signal maybe but it sure made for an interesting day so far, Now I have to play catch up and try to get ready for the sale tonight
