***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Has anyone ever gotten eggs like these? They are from my Blue Ameraucana hen, roughly 1 1/2 years old, in good health usually lays about 5/week (except during the heat wave). All our Ameraucanas free range, and she has unrestricted access to 17% layer pellets and water all day. No extra calcium although I think this indicates I may need to start some. We have gotten 3 or 4 of these and I THINK they are related to the extreme heat we have had. These shells are solid, they only LOOK cracked, it's like they cracked while they were forming and refused along the crack lines? The only one I tried to incubate so far (the extra large mishapen one) quit early- blood ring. It's like they have a crackle finish on them.

My only other theory is this is stressed related- much as I try I can't get my kids to stop trying to catch the chickens... although this is not one of the chickens they usually go after. Cute and annoying at the same time...

Spent a couple of hours in the St. John Urgent Care Center this evening. This morning, fairly intense itching on my upper right chest let me know something had bitten me. It quit itching and I didn't check it until I got home around 2:30. Looked like two spider bites to me, but very little showing other than the two sets of fang marks. However, because I'd killed 6 brown recluse spiders in our home in the last couple of weeks, a call to my doctor netted the advice to go to the urgent care center. Definitely two spider bites. No other symptom yet other than a fairly soft red ring linking the two bites, maybe from my scratching.

Doc put me on antibiotics and told me what to expect. Hopefully, going in and getting it treated before any other symptoms appeared will make it relatively easy to recover from it. He said it can get to looking fairly bad, even with the antibiotics, but the biggest danger is from infection, which we have hopefull avoided.

It was apparently in a blouse I took from a hanger in our closet that I hadn't worn for several months. Never did see the spider so I hope I didn't leave it at the Senior Center!

Also purchsed bombs to set off in the house to kill spiders and many insects. Will do it Monday when we'll both be away from the house. Should have done this earlier.
I certainly hope you caught it early enough that it doesn't cause any problems.

The deer food plot is what we plant in the fall for the birds throughout the winter, it sure does help cut down on buying feed during the winter and early spring, try the rotation method if you have enough room for 2 seperate places, those birds can realy tear that stuff up, have had ours planted for two weeks, the birds have been eyeballing it pretty good, glad all of it is fenced off, they would have it mowed down by now, it is starting to grow pretty doo. We a getting a nice little rain shower tonight, has cooled off by about 25 degrees since the front moved through.

Just checking in-- spent the day in bed with chills then this afternoon my fever spiked to 103.5 so went to the ER. Was worried it may be an alergic reaction to a new medication. They decided it was just a virus. Hope the kids don't get it because this is miserable. Either shivering or sweating.
The rain seems to have missed us, lots of wind but that is it. Worried how the birds are going to fair with the major temp drop.

Spiders have been awful this yr & scorpions are just as bad.

Kass love the black NN with the adorable hair do. Need to take pics of my NN. Have a clean neck bird that I think came from P&B eggs. I don't recall a clean neck chick but there is for sure a clean neck bird running around my yard.
Couple wks ago I took pics of those blue game chicks we bought at Blanchard auction. They are more black looking than blue.

Everyone enjoy some time outside while we have this nice cool weather.

Good morning friends and neighbors! I spent the day cleaning my shop, it needed it badly. I got rid of a old dresser <---(spider hotel) and a futon which opened up some much needed space. We had a little thunderstorm blow through yesterday and the temp dropped and it felt great, my little birds even perked up got active. It`s 62°F and clear here this morning and it looks like the high will be in the low 80`s <----Relief!

Kass, wonderful photos!

Kass - Reba is stunning!

Looks like we got a little bit of rain with our wind last night. I'm going to spend some time after lunch picking up branches that came down during the storm. There was a big game scheduled at school last night. I didn't go. I was fearful of driving in the high winds, and the thought of sitting in the rain on unprotected bleachers just wasn't appealing. We saw lightning from our place. Maybe they had to cancel the game anyway. I'm sure I'll hear all the details on Monday.

The cooler temperatures are very welcome. Hopefully, my hens will start laying more eggs each day. Their production is about 1/3 of what it is normally - I haven't found any hidden nests but their production is like a group has decided to lay somewhere other than in the nest boxes in the coop.

Christina, the NN without any feathers could well be from the NN x Madagascar game eggs you hatched for me. Some of the chicks I have from those eggs have no feathers on their neck and some have just a few. All of mine are blue, black, or splash.

Betsy, OMG! I dread something like that happening, I can't believe I've never been bitten by one as much as I'm outside in areas they like. The bite Buster got seemed to really toss him through the ringer, I don't know that he's recovered yet. Scary.
Rinda, I have no idea what causes shells to look like that.
Christina, that's the same flu thing I've got. I can take TheraFlu and manage to feel a bit better for an hour or so. It's almost got to be something making the rounds.
Elbert, love the picture of that gorgeous bird in your shop! He's a Silver Duckwing OEGB?,
Joe, I can't imagine how proud your son is with all those ribbons :) That's so good for kids to be involved in things like that.
My birds are loving this coolness!
