***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Don't know if anyone remembers I broke the rules of gardening & planted green beans the middle of July (also planted them in the recommended time). The ones I planted at the correct time never germinated since it was too hot. Tonight for dinner we are eating fresh green beans with our dinner!!! The ones we planted in July when everyone thought they would never make it. Also kids picked a handful of purple hulls, but they were not yet purple-- kids thought they were huge green beans! Oh well.

NNbreeder awesome the way everything is working out with you & Teva's new jobs!

Well, here are the two little guys. I have them set up in a big crate and will be feeding them really good the next week or so: Purina flock raiser, with some catfish pellets, oats, and wheat. Lots of clean water, plenty of grit. They are fourteen weeks old now, and have lived a wonderful life with their mom and her flock since they were hatched. They're in a tractor and get fresh grass every day. Only taking them out of there today because they're finally old enough that they're fighting with their dad. I am pretty confident in my dispatching skills by now. When I invite a chicken for dinner it's very low key. They always come to me because I train them to come for treats. I pick them up one at a time and carry them off to dispatch them where the others can't see. They're never slung upside down or scared in any way. I think the way I slaughter them is as painless as dying can ever be, and a lot kinder than a coyote or hawk would be. I guess I'll just cowgirl up and do what I know needs to be done. Thanks, guys.
Edited to add: Even though it's kind of sad, I'll probably hatch out a few more silkie/cochin crosses next year just because I really suspect a cochin/silkie cross hen could hatch a chick from a rock. :D

The hens are the ones colored like the one in the front of the picture. The lady you got your D'Anver from breeds this color of Phoenix, actually she breeds lots of Phoenix colors I believe.
That's what I thought. Are you talking about the breeder's wife (Bridges) in Georgia? I didn't know they were also into the Phoenix.

Oh, I'm sorry! For some reason I thought you got yours from Boggy Bottoms. Where on earth did I get that idea?? No, it's Boggy Bottoms who has Phoenix, unless I confused them with someone else, too lol!

Slow down, Les. We're getting too old to be running around like 40 yr olds :)

On the last 13 hrs of a 72 shift, so ready to go home. Haven't seen my baby chickie doos in almost 3 days!!!!!!!! So brace yourselves for pics tomorrow!!! lol lol lol

This was what I was waiting for, a moving embryo that I got a shaky video of, day six. 10 yr old holding the egg. Those aren't gunshots folks just teenage daughter slamming doors in the background. New Salmon Faverolle inside.

We have had a big ol' chicken filled weekend so far. Friday we moved the 2nd hoop house and one more of the A-Frames. Then hubby and I decide we are going to Coweta to the auction. Left home at 3 and still didn't make it there until 6:30 so missed all the chicks, stuff and eggs. It was definetly a buyers night. We came home with a truck load of pullets. So have lots of birds in quarentine at the moment. Got 5 Barred rock pullets (5months old) $6 each, Nathanel got a porcialin OEGB pullet, 2 spangled oegb pullets and 2 blue oegb pullets all for $4 each. Then Kurt got 3 more partridge banty cochin pullets for $4 each, 2 milli felur duccle pullets $12 each (yes I paid dearly for these but they are soooooo pretty!) , and one porcelin duccle pullet $6. Then my highlight of the night I got two pair of lavender orpingtons!!! I was so excited to come home with them! I want to find a few more pullets to go with these but they are just beautiful!!! Met lots of nice chicken people. While the building had horrible sound in it for hearing everything in the begining this is one well run auction! They moved fast last night but then again they had over 2500 animals there between birds and rabbits. We left around midnight (and came home a quicker way than we went, hubby can't say the back roads are faster anymore, lol) and we got home around 2.

Then this morning went to Perkins. They were light on the birds but sold one pair of Jack's buff brahma bantams and he made $24 for the pair. Lot more than I figured he would since the rest of the birds were going cheap! There were three golden sebright roos that only brought 25 cents each. Sold the last of my roos I didn't need here and came home with 10 bales of hay for the pens for this winter.

Spent the rest of this afternoon moving Kurt's coop he built and getting all the birds in their winter homes. We still have one set of pens to move but I think we will save those for another weekend. Tomorrow I plan on doing a bit of sewing after we get home from church and taking a nap! LOL

I sure guessed right on moving the little boys out of the ark. They started crowing their heads off this afternoon. They're not fighting each other so far, thank goodness. I had to break up a fight in my Dominique cockerel group, but I snapped a quick picture first. I can see why they say that they're descended from dinosaurs!

Don't they look like little velociraptors? Anyway, no cockerels were injured in the making of this film, etc. etc.

went out for a walk wth the chickens tonite-and found - mystery feathers, haven't lost any birds so am clueless

mitzi- channng is in good hands!! joe is coming out of a molt so looks pretty ragged

This summer I had my big black ameraucana rooster lose a chunk of feathers off his chest that looked kind of like this- does the feather color match any of your birdies? It was rather gross looking. The best I can figure it was an old injury and it sloughed off as the skin underneath healed. If my kids didn't bring it to me and tell me they saw it fall off of him I would never have believed he could lose such a big chunk of feathers and skin and still look (and act) just fine and dandy.
