***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Robin - Thanks for letting me bend your ear today. I need to make more time to talk to grownups. I fear, sometimes, that I'll implode if I don't interact more with people my own age. You're an amazing sounding board. It's uncanny how much we think alike.

I'm enjoying keeping your boys for a little while. They'll gripe at me this weekend, but within a few days they'll see me with the feed bucket, and they'll forgive me.
i always enjoy your visits!! i know though how it feels, sometimes ya just gotta be able to share with someone...and my chickens are good listeners, but don't come up with answers for me...:)

Thank you both for being willing to part with your gorgeous boys! all 3 of them are settling in peacefully. They even have a little anterage of girls following them around already. Her is a peek of them in the coop and the yard.

Thanks again ladies and to everyone else who responded to my request!
Awe, glad to see he is settling in nicely. Hopefully the three boys will get along and keep the girls safe.

Christina your doing better in the egg dept. than we are if you got 2 that is double what we got that day! LOL Not sure what is up with that. I am going to put lights back in the coops now that the days are shorter and see if that helps. Hubby thought I was going to put heat lamps in all the coops but I told him no it would have to get REALLY cold to put that many heat lamps out, haha.

Hopefully the cold weather holds off I need Friday to get fresh hay put in nest boxes and make the coops "winter ready". If not guess I will be out in the cold working. Hubby won't be home this weekend so it will be just me out there trying to get it done. Well the little guys will handle the hay, I don't have problems with allergies to bad unless I get in contact with hay then I will be sick for days. So the little boys like to fill the nest boxes.

Also should I put a heat lamp in the little Aframe that has my new momma in it? She hatched out two littles so far and they are just to cute! I want to make sure they all stay warm enough. I figure momma will keep them warm but what about when she needs to leave the nest. Also should I take her mate out of the pen while she raises the babies? So far she had them out in the sun yesterday and he didn't bother them but then again if she is as cranky with him as she is with us right now he is a smart guy for leaving those babies alone! LOL

Cathie we were up to 3 eggs yesterday. The Hen should keep her babies warm & she will beat the tar out of the roo if he gets too close. I did give my mommies fans in the summer but haven't given them heat.

I vote yes baby chicks need heat. Not sure if you have them indoors or out, but the cold front starts moving in tomorrow. Anyone with birds that are still growing will need to add some heat to avoid losses.

Another day of appointments, these really are my favorite days. I love getting poked & prodded.

No, no brick road on main street now, but it is still brick on Penn, which runs in front of the high school. My husband and boys are big on catfishing, but usually head to keystone or Eufala. And yes we have that good BBQ place, Josephs. Best tabouly you'll ever eat. It's a lebanese style steakhouse and bbq. And my sister-in-law and her husband own it!

I love Joseph's and have been known to make the drive from OKC just because of their food.

I never put heat lamps out with a mama there. I have a friend from New Hampshire who has stubborn chickens that go broody when they still have snow on the ground and those chicks just go back under mama when it's cold. We aren't going to get anything like that level of cold. I've had good luck leaving some roosters in and poor luck with others. I guess it all depends on the roo.

Guineas are vicious, ungrateful little <expletive deleted>s. Something attacked my guineas two days ago and I found a pile of feathers and two fewer guineas than I had the night before. The remaining ones have wisely started going into the chicken coop with the young cockerels at night. Well, today one of the missing guineas turned up limping but alive. I caught it at sundown and brought it in to examine it. It had no damage to the legs which surprised me. I found two small puncture wounds, one under each wing and put neosporin on them. Then I turned it over and was SHOCKED to see that something had managed to take a huge bite out of its back, but leave most of its feathers intact so that I hadn't noticed it while carrying it into the house. I cleaned it up, and slathered neosporin on it. Upon completion, the guinea promptly BIT ME IN THE FREAKING FACE. Grrrrr. It's in a cage with food and water now. Stupid guinea.
