***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Good morning to all! Cool and crisp nights have been turning into beautiful daze here and I`m loving it!

Yesterday I did a little remodeling in the 1st pen on the left....when I was building these pens I had larger birds in mind, my little birds decided to roost on the two parallel 2` x `4s and I was afraid that they would get some feather damage so I took `em down and only put one back narrow side up :) problem solved!

This morning I will do another thorough cleaning of the pens and put down some fresh alfalfa.

I hope y`all have a great day!

Elbert, i need you over here!!

love it!

And here is the hen with the hurt foot. I did some cutting on what I thought was the infection, and got nothing but calise like scabs out of it. No blood, and no liquids... I have no idea what else to do now, other than keep clean?? Wish us luck!

well, i have read alot of different suggestions, from cutting and cleaning out the infection- but if you catch it early- i did one today, what i do is make a poultice of sugar and bentadine, bandage their foot with it daily for 4-5 days, it helps bring the infection closer so when you scrape the scab off, just push it a little and the infection (core) will pop out, then pack it with neosporin and bandage it. What i do bandaging is a gauze, then vet wrap then ducktape- the longer you wait to do it, the more chance of it going septic
Thanks, I will def try this tonight. I'll take all the advice I can get! She is one of my Fav hens!! I wish I lived near some of you smart people so you all could teach me this stuff!! Thanks again artsyrobin!

rofl!!! I love it! This is exactly what I'd do. Rebandage it every 2-3 days and put neosporin on it when you do.

i found the sugar poultice idea on a UK site, which is the first choice of vets over there- my girl didn't show any sign of infection yesterday, so before bandaging i sprayed it with vetrycin, put on neosporin and bandaged it- will check it today and see how it looks- another person suggested duramycin poultice, have done that too- but the sugar mix works well

lol, thanks! She seemed happy to have it on! She doesnt peck at it or anything! And I still have your boy! I tell you what! He is such an awesome rooster! He struts his stuff so proudly! He'll top a hen, and then as soon as he is finished, the hen will go run at him and peck him like "I didnt give you permission to do that" and the he's terrified of the hens once again. Its just too funny watching him call them over for some horse poop, and then he looks so confused like "ladies?? I thought you would like this?? Please dont be mad at me!" I swear he has tried to call me over for treats before too! We love him!

Pretty Hen!

I agree with Ksane, clean it and apply neosporin!

This is sooo pretty. I've been wracking my brain too hard trying to figure out how to keep certain pens and yards covered so I don't have to clip wings and it's just not worth it. Do you clip wings? I do on most of mine but was trying to avoid it on the little Bantam Ameraucanas. But I could make them a really nice yard area like you've got here and do away with the dog kennel-attached-to-a-coop setup that I've got and just clip their wings. Seeing it in a picture like this really seals the deal. If I had your set up I'd just sit in it all day and watch birds. Oh wait.....

Thank You! :) No, I don`t clip their wings.....I figure this next Spring I will fence a area in front of the barn and build some drop pens.

1 of my new pullets....
