The PBS show, the Silence of the Bees, was one that I have seen before. It shows pears being hand pollinated in an area of China where pesticides have killed all the bees. With all fruits, vegetables and nuts requiring pollination by insects, the show was a reminder that without bees we ought to get used to living on just grains.
Most beekeepers start hives in the spring. You need to consider two hives, so that you can compare them against each other to determine how your bees are doing. I have names and phone numbers of several beekeepers in the area who sell Nucs in the spring - which are essentially half a hive that you grow into a full sized hive over the spring.
We have two good beekeeper clubs within a short distance of Choctaw and I suggest joining one to get a head start on the learning curve of bees. The Central Oklahoma Beekeepers meet the 4th Tuesday of the month 7-9 pm at the OSU extension center (NE 10th and Portland). The Noble Beekeepers meet the 3rd Thursday of the month at the Noble library from 7 - 9 pm. More information on both clubs and other clubs that meet across the state is available from the state beekeeper's website at www.okbees.org
