Well I just took all the eggs out of the turner and laid them on the wire in the bator. Working on getting the humidity up now to 70% (that's where it should be for the next 3 days, right?) I didn't think I'd be this nervous about it

21 Buff Orp eggs and 11 EE's, 10 Ten Red Quail eggs. All of the chicken eggs should hatch over the next 3~4 days, the quail over the next 6. Then I have 23 Georgia Giant quail eggs in there that are not due until the 17th. Hope raising the humidity does not hurt them.

So, wish me luck!!

Matt

Matt I have usually had my best hatches by just unplugging the turner and leaving the eggs in it. If there is any extra moisyure in the shell it will stay in the bottom. Plus when the early ones hatch they will roll the other eggs around which gets the chicks out of orientation for hatching.

The newer incubators also have a higher top and one can use the styrafoam egg cartons to place the eggs in while hatching.

We didn't get any rain here in Chickber. (That's what I'm going to call the area where I live, between Chickasha and Amber.) It was actually pretty hot and humid today.

And I've got a big paper due Thursday, so no pen building today.

Due to lack of time and funding, my chickens won't be getting the castle they deserve. Just a chicken wire pen like I had before, but a lovely igloo dog house!

All this 'bator talk - and I'm still trying to resist - you all are no good for someone trying to stay on the "no hatching straight and narrow." And after I looked at pictures of Speckled Sussex and Mille Fleur Leghorns today....sigh....

Snap & Teach & dachsunds - thanks for letting me know these rollers are smart enough to figure out how to eat & drink out of chick setups - they keep dumping over all the food I give them in cups. If I mix their chick food, milo and grit all together in a chick feeder will it be okay?

I laughed when I saw Teach ask Snap "how do your birds roll" - for some reason that struck me funny... ya'll and your urban-speak.

Stimpy! Love your sig line (again). That one and another couple I think I've seen from you sound Jack Reacher-ish to me. I seriously heart Jack Reacher (a character in books written by Lee Child).

hi guys, still waiting on rain...keeps going away when it hits the county line. i have discovered my girls are raptors in disguise, yesterday morning spice spied a frog on a log, she grabbed it and the race was on! i felt sorry for the frog, but the chickens were in total raptor mode, grabbing it from each other-

the lice issue is slowly clearing up, only she has shared them with the silkie roo, so i powdered him down good- every time he fluffed his feathers a puff of dust shot up..

18 days to go!!

Ok i'm in a dilema....I have had a light on in a coop all night for the last 3 days with mama hen and her chick....Will this hurt them and or their sleeping ? I just dont want them to get too cold ..plus its my first time to raise a baby chick and mam hen. The light comes on at dark and off before sunrise? too much light or heat?Basically i dont want to do it if it will mess up there sleeping.

I have momma and 10 chicks outside never had a light. She will keep them plenty warm enough. As far as it hurting them don't know. I really don't think they need it. Mine go to bed at dusk and wake up at daylight. I let them free range for an hour or so every night and they march back inside at dusk.

tonight a juvinile hawk flew right over them. I know he was checking them out.

Hey Soonerguy - you can turn the light off. Unless it's a red light it could mess with their sleep/rest cycle. You and the chickens are in Oklahoma right now, correct? So it's not getting cold at night. I would be more concerned that mama hen will get too hot if she and baby can't get away from the light. Mama, food and water is all the heat baby needs - when it's cold it will get under her and if not it will move away from her. Having a new baby peep that one of your clucks hatched is exciting - good on ya for wanting to do everything right!

Memaw - You're in business now !!!!!!!!! That's what we use
here...the GQF Sportsmans. Sounds like a good deal, too !
For egg trays, go to Smith Poultry. You can get 8 dozen large
hen eggs "per layer"...... or 430 quail eggs "per layer".....LOL

No, on second thought, don't think about the numbers yet........

Kendra, TJ and Na-Na are with Al.......we could live on pasta.....
Pa-Pa, on the other hand, has been around Teach too often,
I guess......LOL

Y'all.....Have a good one !

City that is fine with the feed

I agree turn the light off and don't worry about it they will make it...I only use red lights...I would love to say that i was the genius that was like red is best cuz they don't even know it is on and does not mess with their timers...but nope

Whirlwind - as tempting as it might sound...don't pull a stimpy on the hawk bad mojo!

NaNa - I will proudly claim company with PaPa any day of the week...that there is good people! It don't hurt none that a couple of my favorite people in the world went around with those handles
