Nope. Just a lady from the New Okie Pioneers email group is raising chickens for me... I paid for the chickens/feed, she keeps them out at her place, when they are ready to butcher, I'll go up there with J and hopefully haul them to Talequah. I have to call and set up an appointment though, since they are very firm on the appointment part.

She did that this morning, even modeled the clothes/hat and said that she liked the fact she could wear it again later, etc.

Both she and I woke up in much better moods this morning.

Sooner you are most welcome. I think Al is just a busy guy.

Quenston, did you get that washer plucker done? How many are you planning to process today? Good luck with it!

For me, it's just a very nice relaxing day working on our little farm. I have to go check some problems with one of our rental properties, but other than that, it's all home-work.

Morning folks...attitude is better but still not great...gonna go make decisions...

Didn't know the young man from Booker...this an off year for our kids to go to nationals...

Thanks guys for the thoughts...totally believing in crying over pets...

Although I deal with attitude everyday...I love it! Kids ask me why I would do it...lots of families work for the company I worked for so they can guess what I made...more than teaching

...what makes it worth it is when they come back and thank you or realize their senior year that friends have just been using the or bringing them down...

gotta go mess with stuff...the rain shorted out my electric fence...redo time and all that...

Sorry to hear about both your dog and your birds, teach. I hate losing dogs like that. I like all my critters, but the dogs are special to me. Hope your weekend goes better than your Friday.

Mornin' Al.

And the same to you! I love Halloween. Best time for good storytelling. I get to tell stories I can't tell any other time of the year.

Do you know where the term and practice "bon fires" come from? In olden times, folks believed they were haunted by their kin until Halloween night, when they would gather up all the bones of the folks who had died that year and pile them in a big pile and burn them. Hence, BONE fire! That would release the spirits of the dead and they wouldn't bother them any more.

One of the rituals of the evening was to dress up and get made up like the dead and get inebriated. For luck, the young men would line up and jump over the big fire. If they made it, that meant they would live another year. If they didn't, that meant they wouldn't.

And for some reason, they didn't.

I'm not counting my birds no more!

I know within 3 digits how many birds I have and that's close enough. Funny thing is, all the birds keep getting smaller as I go...

Disclaimer: this group is a bunch of "enablers" and if you aren't already addicted to hatching eggs, attending poultry auctions and acquiring more poultry than you have room for, we will do our best to help you acquire such an addiction. So, what kind of poultry do you have and what can we help you find?

I'm not into breeding - just eating the eggs and listening to the chickens make happy noises. I have mostly "mutts." I have some nice Buff Orpingtons and Rhode Island Reds. I had a pair of Barred Rocks pullets, but one dropped dead on me the other day.

I also picked up some really cheap OEG's the other day - some are hens and some are youngish pullets not quite ready to lay. The guy also sold me a rooster that looks to be RIR but the hens look more like Wellsumers, I think. I don't know much about chickens. I just can't wait till they start laying! I'm being patient, though. Most of them are just now 5-6 months old. The few older hens I have (only 4) are laying - I get an egg pretty much every day. I think some of the older hens are 2-3 years old.

How long is a chicken's productive life, anyway?
