All domestic ducks, except muscovies, are descendants of wild mallards. They all share some common characteristics. The female quacks and the males have more of a whisper. In summer plumage some breeds, both genders look pretty similar. So, in adult ducks, if it quacks it's a female and if it has a curled tail feather, it's a male. I don't know of a way to sex ducklings.

Ah, I used to do that with my mom. Except I did it a bit differently. Imagine a woman sitting in a chair reading a book. Small child comes up and asks a question quietly, but like a statement instead of a question. Mom says "uh huh" and keeps reading.

I can't tell you how many times this tactic worked for me...

Call ducks are probably my favorite bird to raise. I just sold my last trio a few months ago. One day I may get some more, but not right away. I'm sure you will enjoy yours. They are comical to watch as they interact with each other and with other animals.
