I don't mean to be a late-comer but, at Maud, Jim Stallings brings a pallet of fancy scratch to every sale and will sell to highest bidder.

Most of the time it sells for $5 - $7 a 50# bag. If you talk with him, he might sell you a pallet of it off-site.

This is how I feel today so far:

I scheduled for Friday off since the processor had told me previously that they do butcher/process on Fridays. I have to have a minimum of a week's lead time in order to take a day off work and use my paid time off. So I called today, since he only likes to schedule a day or two out... just for him to tell me there's no slaughter on this Friday, and since I don't have a huge order I of course don't rate my own slaughter. This just doesn't seem to be working for a person who can't just drop everything and go right there. When I was told I could "schedule a day" when I first called them (in November!) I wasn't aware that it was "please schedule a day less than 2 full days out and I'll tell you whether or not it'll work". Oh, and the kicker... he asked for my phone number (again) so he could call me back this evening or "possibly" tomorrow and tell me if they will actually be butchering on Friday. Which, btw, is the exact same thing he told me last month... and he NEVER called back. Yes, I'm upset. I lost 7 meat chickens out in Okmulgee where they currently are taking up someone elses' time/space/money during that darned cold snap because this guy couldn't be bothered to tell me if they could fit me in on a day that I'd already previously scheduled off. Now he wants me to believe him this time? Why?

Maybe I need an exploding head icon.

There is good news today though... I called that Livestock Nutrition place in Guthrie, minimum order is 300 lbs and they have barrels available to put them in (they can put 300 lbs in a barrel). The barrel costs the first time ($20) but I can bring it back and they'll put future feed orders back in the barrel. Considering my house butts up to a creek and the house on the north side of me is a foreclosure, mice and rats can be a problem and the feed needs to be stored in metal containers. I could literally fill a metal trash can with it, and when I'm down to the last trash can, I could bring the barrel back and have it refilled (ok, the feed comes in bulk bags. The bulk bag can be dropped into the barrel. They wouldn't need the barrel beforehand in order to get it filled). That would be awesome. Oh, and they have different locations on their website: http://www.lnc-online.com/New Site/contacts.htm

faerielady : I have no idea who you've been talking to at DARP; I had very good luck when I took two batches up there in October.

Raymond Jones: 918 207 7181 is the guy I first contacted and is Manager of the entire project, including the farm. He didn't seem to know what was being scheduled in the processing end and referred me to:

Bryan Hostick: 918 207 0565 is the person I dealt with in scheduling and got good results.

Of course, they seemed to be full up and working hard back then. Maybe they really don't have much going on right now. But, if they want to make a go of that processing thing, they need to get their act together.

Hope this helps a little. Have been where you are, and was about ready to slash my wrists. Good luck. oldbat

I looked at buying but you have to also consider loading and unlading the barrels. Its not that easy unloading barrels with several hundred pounds of feed in them
The place I checked with, I wasn't saving that much even buying by the ton.
Plus I would have to buy more barrels.
$20 bucks for a barrell is high.

Bryan is the one who has only give me a day or two out! Said just this morning that he could do it tomorrow, but not Friday as of right now... but that he'd call later if they do schedule something for Friday.

I don't want anybody to feel like I'm bad mouthing them. I'm not. I've ordered from them before during one of the chicken runs, in fact P&B nearly ran over J when J was picking them up for me (

) I'm just saying that every time I call, I get the whole "scheduling for tomorrow, MAYBE the day after" spiel, and he knows because I've TOLD him that I can't do that. It feels to me like I'm not being listened to... but then again, I only have 23 chickens to butcher. I'm not a big moneymaker. I understand the cost of doing business, and I know that making something special for me would mean they would LOSE money. I just think the schedule could be handled better than it is... and there's really no excuse for telling me you're gonna call me back (and I'm a potential customer!) unless you really *don't* want my business... and if you DON'T want my business, then maybe you should just tell me that!

I know the barrel is high... but I figured I'd try it once and see how it worked for me. I placed an order for 300 lbs of layer for pickup on Friday. I also don't have very many chickens, so 300 lbs is going to last quite a while for me.
