nnbreeder, you posted that birds were selling really high at the Jones auction. How about chicks?

We went to the Blanchrd auction last night and brought some really nice looking 1 month old Egyptian Fayoumi and Brabanter chicks and they only got up to $1.25 bid, and of course I PO'd them. I was shocked! But hatching eggs sold well ... $8 a dozen on up. Our 3 month old naked neck pullets only brought $6 each! I was disappointed. The Cement auction brought higher prices than the Blanchard auction too. People were sure buying the bantams up like crazy though ... bb red bantams were selling for $18+. I guess it's just a different crowd there, and they like bantam breeds better.

So, it looks like maybe we should try the Jones auction next time, if the weather is good. We've got to do some serious downsizing at our place, since Gerald has decided he wants to play more with his retired military trucks. He and a group of others have gotten together to go on convoys and parades. Here's a youtube clip of their last convoy. He's in the truck with the yellow convoy lights flashing on it.

We were at the Blanchard auction last night as well. My daughter had her heart set on one white leg horn.. That is what she got and an egg was in the cage with it as well today. What about the Lexington auction Monday ? No fees to sell I here ....
Any one going ?
I am looking at adding okcarla so maybe we will meet....

Not sure about Lex auction but I do think I might try out the Noble auction Tuesday night. Just to get a feel for it. And it is earlier 5 pm start time, and closer.

Problem with the Lex auction is they have Misc stuff 1st and the last time I was there it lasted well into 10 30 pm, had the grandson with me an he had school the next morning. And the birds just were not selling for a good price that night. Got 70 bucks for 25 birds.

15 % commission at Noble and no PO fee.

True that it only costs 5 dollars to the government...but the testers are not employed by the gov. They are just average Joes that gotta pay for the supplies and getting to you...

$16 for a bird...I have paid way more than that! It is all in how much you want them...

Nicole here are some pics of OEGB they are silver duck wings...the moderns are another type of OEGB...but are thinner with longer legs I like these and raise several colors...will hopefully have chicks for the swap

Teva gave three dollars each for some five day old Welsummer chicks. There wasn't much intrest in them, people want POL hens to suppliment the food bill.

Last year in Norman GSA sold a few of the early Gama Goats. the forestry dept has 80 of them at Goldsby but I don't know if they will ever put them up for sale. They have them stacked three high in their yard.

show type bantams usually sell good,old english and moderns seem to top the list every year, followed by cochins and silkies.
again, white is not the best selling color, but does sell better in most of the bantams than it does in large fowl.

It's the quality of the individual bird that determines the value. Not the color. I raise White Rocks and I've given over $50 for a single rooster, and refused more than that for another.

I have no trouble selling the birds that I am willing to let go of, and could sell many more if I had them.

I thought OE was OE and Modern was Modern, 2 differnt breeds all together.
They have totally differnt dispostions OE is a little flighty and Modern's are as calm as they come. Body styles are differnt too, OE have hangy down wings and Moderns are tight to the body. OE shorter legs and Moderns LONG legs??

So am I off my rocker thinking that they were 2 differnt birds??? Like cochins and silkies?? Both are feather-legged but differnt.

Teach - what kind of moderns do you have?? We have a pair of red brown (brown red) and my son REALLY wants a hereford (red pyle) pair. I would definatly be interested in trading/buying some from you at the swap. Are you going to the Pryor bantam show??

Thank you so much for all the input on the Marans. When I asked the lady for a picture of the eggs she said:
"they we;re bought eggs and I hatched them back last year do remember them being darker then the black copper eggs that i had at he same time hatching I was hatching alot of eggs from top lines and they are from those lines very good egg color ,thanks and sorry no pics though to long ago"

Anyway, this was from yesterday, and I have not talked to her yet today. She did say she had a couple more people interested in them, and one was coming out today to look at them So, it is possible they are not even available anymore....
