All you that hatch eggs please help me out.
My turkeys WILLNOT lay in their nest boxes. They find the muddiest part of the yard and lay in that.
They have nest boxes in several different places but the middle of the pen or anywhere but in the box works best for them.
So, I am getting some dirty eggs. I don't want to start any wars and long heated post but has anyone ever tracked how washed eggs do when hatching? If you hatch washed eggs what did you wash them in? I am going to try sandpaper on some tonight. They will be set Sunday so they be just 7 days old and younger. I am keeping them in the well house where it cool. I was thinking I mark the ones that I have to wash and then keep a log of if they hatched or not. The only problem with that is I can hatch chickens at 90% even had a couple of 95% last year. But I am not great at hatching turkeys. But I was setting shipped eggs too. I have a GQF with a turner. I think I got about 200 plus eggs in there right now. Mostly chickens some turkeys.
I been told not to set the eggs if you have to wash them. But that sames like a big waste.
Carla, do you ever have to wash your eggs?
Also I know a guy the looking to buy 500 Quail, anyone got some for sale?
And for my third and last question on hatching. I had a guy from the Southern part of the state call me last week to ask if I had ever heard of people not using racks and just laying them on a towel in the tray in the bator? I think I did that a couple of times last year before I got my racks. Then I would just reach in with a glove on and move them side to side. It was on chicken and the hatch was good. But I told him I would ask you all. He wanting to set goose eggs and can't fit as many in with the racks he has. I got this used GQF and it had PVC pipe dividing it and I decided real fast to not use them. My plastic flat like racks allow me to put two of them per tray which hold 72 eggs. Her way I could only put half that in. Someone told me you could even double stack the plastic flats but I am not going to try that. It sames like you wouldn't get the air flow you need doing that.

Ok Lightning,

I rescued some muddy eggs before by washing in Betadine and hot, hot water. The water must be 100 to 110 degrees Fahrenheit. Too cold and you'll have gunk enter through the pores in the egg.

1. Add some Betadine (Povidone-Iodine Solution, 10%) to a clean plastic shoebox sized container.
2. Fill the container half way with clean water (100 - 110 degrees F - I use a digital baby thermometer) You may have to add hotter water or colder water after you test the temperature.
3. The water should look like dark tea. I didn't measure, I just poured.
4. Put the dirty eggs in the water for one to three minutes. Don't answer your phone or start another activity. Stay with your eggs!
5. Take out the cleanest egg first and rinse it in the hottest water your hands (in gloves) can stand, about 115 degrees F.
6. Put the rinsed eggs on a clean towel to air dry.
7. Repeat step 5 until all your eggs are rinsed.

There's a website out there somewhere with more specific information about washing eggs using Betadine solution. I can't find it.

I figure if you're going to toss the eggs anyway, why not try a hot, hot Betadine wash. Cold - Warm water gets into the egg. 100 degrees + doesn't pass through the pores. Over 120 degrees and you've poached your eggs.

Gerald washes all our eggs, both for hatching and eating. He uses hot water and a vegetable brush to clean off the eggs. As for disinfectant, we are putting in about 8-10 drops of Oxine in per cup of water to disinfect the brush. We get great fertility on all our eggs, as long as we have a good male to female ratio.

We have several places for our turkeys to lay. I think they prefer the plastic barrels. We also have plastic dog houses and/or wooden dog houses. We still have a few hens that like to lay an egg in the mud or in their water bowls, but not too often, thank goodness.
