Hey! I talked to Okla-Doodle-Doo Wayne and Brenda this afternoon. I called them because I was kind of worrying that they might return to a flooded home in Tennessee, since they live in the Nashville area. They said that their place had about 17 inches of rain during the storms, but their house is fine. They live on higher ground about 30 miles north of the worst of the damage. Wayne & Brenda are currently visiting family in Amarillo and haven't been able to get online to check in, so I thought I'd pass along this update.

Hope everyone is doing well today.

Poco - the little Marans I got from you are doing great...they're in with the two RIR pullets I got in the auction that Faerielady sent through Poultryand Bees. Faerie, in case you're lurking - those two little red pullets are the most fearless chickens I've ever had - you must have spent some time with them!

City,

Thanks for letting me know how the Marans are doing. My Maran pullet pen is overflowing until this weekend. I've got a buyer who's taking a dozen on Saturday. I set the feather-legged Maran eggs from POOPS, so I'm anxious to have more soon. I really enjoy the breed. I also got feather legged Maran chicks during the donation auction. Those little guys are amazing.

Please tell us about your Yak - I have raised goats, sheep and llamas, but have never considered a Yak. Other than being incredibly cool looking, why are they raised? Fiber? Meat? to pull a cart?

Yes to all of the above... fiber, meat, trekking, just cuz they look cool. LOL! When I moved up here to Michigan four years ago, I did so to be with the man who I had been long-distance dating for a while. He was living in a huge condo on a golf course at the time. I'm not a country club type of wife, and we ended up finding this piece of land that we now live on. It's a small parcel-only about ten acres. Everyone up here does the horse thing, but that's not my cup of tea. Having grown up with cattle, that's what I wanted. After some research, I discovered that yaks are a bovine creature that consume one third of what traditional beef cattle do. They also shed their wooly underlayer in the Spring. If one wants to take the time to brush it out (not me), it can be sold for about $4 an ounce. I have a lot of info on my webpage about yaks. If you have time, check it out. We raise ours for meat, but our breeders are wonderful 'pets'. They're very spirited, and very unique in personality. We absolutely love them!

After reading about your yaks I was ready to find one for our place, then read Doc's comment that they are not heat tolerant. Since I already have to run a mister system each summer for the rabbits and llamas, guess I will forgo acquiring any yaks. Losing 2 llamas a few years ago to heat stroke was NOT a pleasant experience.

Just an update on this weekend auction. At 2pm we sell new electronic products consigned by a local store. This includes speaker wire, computer speakers, metal switch covers and outlet covers, cordless phone batteries, computer cables, etc also will be a few groceries. At 4pm we will sell goats, sheep, etc. At 5pm will sell Poultry,Poultry supplies,Rabbits etc. after the poultry who knows what.

Remember the 2pm sell has drawn new people to the poultry.

The poultry supplies from an Oklahoma poultry farm will be sold during the poultry portion.

Looking for a bottle kid goat several will be there.

We are going to spread the Poultry Farm consignment over the next few months do to large quanities. This should give everyone an chance to get in on some of it.
