Okies in the BYC The Original

I place abandoned or (rehabbed) injured pet ducks and geese that are brought to WildCare of Noble. If anyone here has pet ducks or geese and would possibly be interested in providing a good home for others, please PM or email me so we can see what could work (it's also perfectly okay to indicate an interest for a later time like in the fall or next spring, etc). Because of the mission of WildCare, it's important the animals be adopted as pets only (not to eat or sell as a business). Thank you fellow Okies! (Is this a great state or what?!)

You can put as many birds as will safely fit in a carrier. People bring their birds in all kinds of cages, big and small. The most popular cage looks like a wire rabbit cage. When we take birds for sale, we usually put them in double, triple or quad wire cages and then put several birds in each cage. We also usually bring containers for water for each of them. We save plastic coffee cans & cut them down for waterers for our auction birds.

Carla,

Do you know if they ever have extra cages that people can use to put their birds for sale in? I can go out long enough to check in my birds, but I can stay long enough for them to sell and retrieve my cages. My cages are worth more than the birds I want to sell. How can I do that?

You can try asking some of the folks on here that are planning to go, to get your cages after your birds run thru the sale. Another option is to call Jerry (he co-owns the auction company and is a BYC'er) and ask him if he would be willing to let you use his cages (there is almost always a stack of them somewhere) -- but who knows...it wouldn't hurt to ask!

I am ready for some of the cold weather we complained about last winter and some of the rain we complained about this spring. My pens are finally dry - and cracking. I am going to worm my laying flock this weekend,. I am only getting about 6-8 eggs a day from 20 hens, so there won't be many eggs to refrain from feeding to humans.

I don't do heat and humidity well, so am doing my best to get things done after dark or really early in the morning.

What kind of eggs do you have coming for your incubator?

It's almost time to venture over to Bass Pro Shop parking lot to get my frozen chicken from the back of a truck

$1 a pound is hard to pass up! But I still think it's hilarious that we are buying stuff from the parking lot!!

At our auction (Durant), I saw some wire commonly used for tomato cages, cut about in half and wrapped with a piece of poultry wire. It looked secure enough, and must have been pretty cheap.

There's a BYC member that has developed program (and used to list it on the auction division of this forum all the time). It's called Chicken Trackin' I think

That's a good idea, asking the auction owners, Jerry and Jim. Just give them a call & ask to make sure. Here's their craigslist ad with phone numbers to call http://oklahomacity.craigslist.org/fgs/1835100535.html

I'd offer to bring extras of ours for you to use, but I'm not sure that we have any extra, since we're taking some birds too.

Yeah, anything that will keep a bird in it is good enough. Even boxes with holes cut out for air would probably work

Fun Chick be sure and wear your trench coat and keep your hat pulled down and the shades on when doing those parking lot rendevous!lol I have a Shell station just off the interstate that I meet people from Nashville at when yhey buy birds. My grandson thinks its funny ,calls it my "Nashville Cartel Connection"!lol

P&B we had a news story last night about two family dogs that were stung to death by a swarm of killer bees in Nashville. They were in a tree but the dogs water bowl was by the tree and I guess with the heat they were nervous and felt threatened! Really sad story. So bee careful and watch out for those rengades!

Here is the information from the old post:

My Chicken Trackin' accounting software is now available! Works like to checkbook register to help you keep track of chicken-related income and expenses. Works on Windows right now, but will be available for Mac users later on. Check out the screen shots and download a fully functional, 30-day trial at www.ChickenTrackin.com

I believe it gives you the ability to enter breed and other information.

You have found a wonderful group of folks who either live in Oklahoma or wish they lived in Oklahoma.
Disclaimer: some of us have addictions to hatching eggs, attending poultry auctions and otherwise acquiring poultry. Since addicts tend to be enablers, we may try to persuade you to try some of our addictions.

So what kind of hens do you have, do you want to acquire more and of what breed? Are you planning to try hatching eggs, either with a broody hen or with an incubator?

I have 9 hens. 8 are either RIR or a red sex link (bought from Atwoods, enid) and the other im not sure of. Its got yellow feathers and feathery legs ( i thought it was a buff orp but all the pics i see dont have hairy legs). Im thinking of adding to the litter next spring so i can have a rotation of eggs coming in since i hear they only lay for about 2 yrs. after 2 yrs, ill cull the heard and add the rookies. I really dont want any more than about 20 at any one time. Ive got a friend that is going to start over next spring w/ all RIR and when he orders his, ill probably ask to add some to the order for me.

As for hatching, i dont have (or want) a rooster so the hatching part is out.

Here in Enid, our lovely city govt considers chicken as livestock and we have a no-livestock ordinance and im not sure im even supposed to have them, but I do and they live at my shop. it sits on close to an acre of ground and has few neighbors and im zoned part commercial and part industrial so Id argue to the end im okay (plus i know the city atty), but i dont want to push my luck w/ a noisy rooster (tho it couldnt be any worse than the bnsf line that runs by at 100').

I got the chicks for the eggs and im hoping theyll start laying more than we can eat so i can sell a few here and there. right now, just about 2 or 3 are laying so im sure one day, it will pick up to that point.

Thanks everyone for the welcome!! We (okies) are a talkative group as we have over 6700 pages and no one else is even close. OKIES ROCK!
