Ok Turkey's people~

How long do they have to be penned together before you are sure of being a pure bred?? I will also be looking for a blue slate tom in spring unless a really good deal comes up before.

Why is it that my chickens feel the need to come out, while I'm checking on them at night, to get drinks of water?

Hello, All I’m new here this is my first post. I live in Bartlesville OK 74003 and looking to get started in this hobby asap. I eat 2 egg every day very excited about getting things going. I want about 4 to 8 hens and I want following breeds Plymouth Rock, Maranas, Sussex, and Rhode Island Red one of each or maybe two. I’ll have no problem getting rid of eggs and can’t wait to see(eat) a Maranas egg.

Thanks for reading

Isn't that normal? Mine do it all the time - I go out to check on the dog and all the chickens come out of the coop to see if there are any treats being handed out.

You have found a wonderful group of folks who either live in Oklahoma or wish they lived in Oklahoma

You are our favorite kind of new person to the thread - you want to acquire chickens and you are asking for assistance in acquiring them

(not that any of us are addicted to acquiring chickens or anything or that we would try and "enable you" in acquiring an addiction to attending poultry auctions or hatching eggs or anything like that

All eggs from hens fed the same thing, taste the same - regardless of the color of shell. That said, are you sure you don't want to add an Easter Egger or two and get some green eggs to go with your "colorful eggs from cheerful chickens?" That would give you a real "Martha Stewart" variety of egg colors.

You might want to do some reading on one of the marans threads before you invest more than the average amount for a maran hen. Just because they are a maran, doesn't mean their eggs will be a really dark chocolate brown. Different lines of birds have different colored eggs and the egg color can vary from week to week even with the same bird, since the color of the egg is layered over a white inner shell and the age of the bird and how long it has been laying within an egg laying cycle will affect the color of the shell. In other words, use caution when acquiring marans if dark colored shells are really important to you.

Have you identified your shelter for the birds? The size will affect how many birds you will be able to happily house. Of course, there are some of us who acquire the birds first and then start building additional coops and runs. I won't call names, but we know who we are

I don't, but I know a guy who will rent you his for $25 a day. Real nice Featherman Delux tub style plucker. Can do up to 4 birds in 30 seconds and have them comepletely clean.

Jaku from Michigan builds them. You can find him over in the meat bird section.

I have an old time tabletop plucker that works well for me that I got on Craigslist. I can't remember if it was Sooner or PnB who set me on to it.

Good Morning everyone~ sorry I bugged out last night, I was tired & the kids had homework that required the computer.

We will give the credit to P&B because I still don't have the hang of Craigslist& they never seem to have what I want when I want it. LOL.
