A true self sustaining meat bird means one that can grow to a decent butcher weight 4-6lbs dressed in 18-22 wks with certain good meat charateristics, and can breed, lay, and hatch the same exact bird every time. Right now the only option is buy Hybrid chicks that will not live long enough to reproduce, like the Cornish X that will get to 6lbs in 8 wks, but have severe heart and leg issues. In a nut shell that is it, it is an in depth operation and some of us meat bird folks are trying several different projects.

That is what I thougth but wanted to be clear. Sounds like a very worthy project. I'm glad you enjoy it. Lets see what else I can learn today.
Well, I have a babysitter lined up for Saturday. I am crossing my fingers that nothing goes wrong between now and then and I will be able to make it to Shawnee.
How does their sale barn work? Do they sell at a certain time or certain day? Is it an auction or just a straight sale of birds? Not that I'm looking, of course...the cages in the back of the Jeep are just in there because there was no room to store them in the garage. You all believe that, right?
Howdy....lost all the kids to a tounament so i will goof for a bit.
I am so ready for a bird break...the Christmas one will be welcome as well.
The sale area is done by the owners of the birds. You find birds you like find the owner and figure a price...usually they will be listed and usually have a phone number so that person does not have to stand there waiting...should be a much larger sale area this year!
