They normally go into pens in the basement every evening and back out in the late AM. We live in town, so we have to work with our neighbors to continue to keep them. We recently added more insulation to the coop. The hope is that at least when the neighbors are inside with their windows closed, they can't hear the roos crowing while closed up in the coop.

I say basement as there is an inside stair down, but it's between a basement and cellar. Only a half around 6ft clearance, less where there are any pipes. Old cellar in a 100 yr old farmhouse with limestone foundation walls and a pullchain light. Last owner cemented the floor, added a sump hole, extended and covered the outside access and put in a new set of concrete stairs and a regular door.

We keep birds of all ages there depending on the situation. Chicks, juvies, breeding pairs, birds being prepped for show, injuries, etc. We started with x-large dog crates stacked double on wheels for easy moving to sweep. Slowly but surely I've been getting it more like a kennel system and we now have pens ranging from 4 sq ft to 18 sq ft and an auto watering system. When I'm done with that I plan to put in a sink since I have water and sewer access.

That is my thoughts, I would let them take the break now for spring when I want to hatch they will be ready.

Do you have other breeds besides cochins? Are you cochins standard or bantam? What colors? Love cochins can you tell?

My cochins are bantams. The roo is a buff and i have a black, partridge, white, and buff hen. My grandpa bought them for me for easter. I also have RIR and Barred rocks.

ashmanv, you need to visit with Mjgigax on here. She lives close by you and has a bantam Cochin project going too.

I live near you too, but I don't have any cochins.

Just got off work this morning, and was up most of the night, so on my drive home I'm a "little" tired and cranky. Well have a conversation w/ my husband who seems to be deliberately provoking me.

As I drive home I contemplate why a sane man would deliberately provoke a tired and cranky woman with whom he lives,

seemed like suicide to me!

Well I get home and realize he has cleaned the house .................

Wow that is pretty amazing! I can completely understand the need for the additional lighting.

Sorry everyone my mind is wondering as I am trying to line up someone to install my doors........and possibly trim.

There is an old building that used to be a horse barn out back. I'm hoping at least by the end of the summer to have one side closed off as a large coop with separate pens/outside run accesses and a storage/kitchen area for canning and processing.

Our outside coop insulation project right now is to experiment on a smaller scale and see just what all we'll need to do to keep everyone happy. That way we'll know how and where to put the money into the larger building.

The basement will likely always remain in use though especially for the kids showbirds as it's just darn convenient. I've got 2-4 lights with those twisted bulbs running on a timer from 7AM to 9PM. How many depends on how many pens are in use. I'm thinking of switching over to LED rope lights, but haven't decided yet.

Right now I'm working on installing solid backs throughout and sanded paint on the pen floors as finances permit.
