They normally go into pens in the basement every evening and back out in the late AM. We live in town, so we have to work with our neighbors to continue to keep them. We recently added more insulation to the coop. The hope is that at least when the neighbors are inside with their windows closed, they can't hear the roos crowing while closed up in the coop.
I say basement as there is an inside stair down, but it's between a basement and cellar. Only a half around 6ft clearance, less where there are any pipes. Old cellar in a 100 yr old farmhouse with limestone foundation walls and a pullchain light. Last owner cemented the floor, added a sump hole, extended and covered the outside access and put in a new set of concrete stairs and a regular door.
We keep birds of all ages there depending on the situation. Chicks, juvies, breeding pairs, birds being prepped for show, injuries, etc. We started with x-large dog crates stacked double on wheels for easy moving to sweep. Slowly but surely I've been getting it more like a kennel system and we now have pens ranging from 4 sq ft to 18 sq ft and an auto watering system. When I'm done with that I plan to put in a sink since I have water and sewer access.
