update on the little chick with the swollen shoulder, it is starting to drain, she isn't too crazy about the warm baths, but it seems to be helping...

another question, as we are still building the coop, is it safe to have a tree in the enclosure, or would it be risky for predators to hang out?

My folks always told me the town Slapout got its name because when anyone came into the store and asked for something, they were told the store was "slap out of that."

My family is from the Oklahoma Panhandle and I am proud of it. (But please don't ask me to move back there!!)

I have tree's in my inclosure but I have netting across the top with cutouts around the trees. I haven't had any trouble with anything getting up there other than my own chickens! The wind blew the gate shut and the roosted on top cause they couldn't get in.

Really? I always thought that was just a story my grandad told me. I'm from Beaver, OK - the Cowchip Capitol of the World. When we were kids we "got" to gather cowchips for the annual Cowchip Throwing Contest.

Cowchips had a real important use in the old days. Can anyone tell me what they were used for? (no fair using the 'net)

You are correct Monty! Cowchips burn really fast and leave a lot of ash, so it takes a lot of them to keep a fire going.

I hope Teach hasn't forgotten what wood is and doesn't end up bringing all different kinds of cowchips to us at POOPS...Hereford, Angus, Charolais, Simental, Beefmaster, etc.
