I also attended the Cement auction and I found it to be a pretty well run auction as far as country yahoo auctions can be, with that said, I thought it was a good session for a buyer, chicks were plentiful with good variety. quite a few birds with alot of different breeds, way too many Bantams for my liking, things moved along pretty well, not to crowded, clean and orderly nice but simple consession stand, not too many kids. and yes at the end it was pretty hectic, with not enough help to get your order, I always pay and get out 30 min prior to the melay.
I found the prices to be good for most things, but i did have to watch the hawks in the back, or phantom bidders who are there to bid up the price for the good ole boy network, but once they know that you know who they are they tend to be more carefull, when you bid.
All in all I bought some birds in good health for a good price, I am happy and will certainly attend again.

well it sounds like ya'll had bout the same luck I had at the monroe auction there was a ton of people and ton of birds and other stuff nothing really went for to good a price except my sheep I sold her for 40.00 and a glass vase went for 6.00 that wasn't too bad but the pigeon and guinea didn't do so good. And I got one of my cages stolen but I got the guys name and phone # and told him to bring it back or I was going to have him banned from this auction and every other one in the area! I think that when I take my birds from now on I am going to but them in make shift cages that if someone takes them I am not at a loss. well I know that at the stock I am going to make sure before birds are taken out that the sellers are there to take them out of the cages so that no one loses anyting.

al6517, I'm sorry, I forgot to mention that we met you there! I'm glad you had a good experience. It sounds like you have some of those people that bid figured out! Yeah, I know some do bid the price up for each other. I remember at one of the Harrah auctions, a lady was bidding on some stuff ... and the auctioneer stopped and told her she couldn't bid on her own items! I couldn't believe she was running up the price on her own things! She apparently had been doing it for quite a while already when they stopped her. She still goes to that auction ... so maybe she has someone else bid for her? Luckily, I'm not interested in what she sells.

Yeah everyone, I think auctions prices are low since there's an overabundance of chicks and extra birds right now, combined with warm temperatures and the economy & high gas prices and people vacationing. It's definitely a great time to buy!

OKcarla : glad to have met you at the auction, sorry to hear about your mix-up and the prices your birds brought, your Buff O's looked really well cared for. I would have liked to find more of what I was looking for, but oh well maybe next time. Oh and what do you think happen to the chick's you bought that passed when you got home ?.

al6517, I think the 20 araucana chicks that I bought were without food & water for too long, and that combined with the heat & stress were too much for them. They look to be about a week old. I knew I was in trouble with them when I got home with them and put them in the brooder and they just laid their heads down. I got each one and dipped it's beak in the water with the poultry electrolyte supplement in it, and most perked up within the hour and began eating, but a few still couldn't stand up. I hadn't planned on bringing anything home with me that was alive yesterday, or I would have brought food & water with us. I think it's really hard on the birds to be without food & water for so long ... and no telling how long they were in those boxes before they arrived at the auction. They had no room to move around in the box, too.

I'd be willing to bet those chicks weren't the only ones that were distressed when the people took them home last night.

wow it sounds like the auctions are something you have to have some 'horse sense' to navigate. I think since I am such a newbie to the chicken world, I may go to one of these to observe. Are there measures in place to try and prevent theft at chickenstock?

okiemommy, after the little ordeal I had with my chicken auction on friday night I do have a plan of action for the chickenstock all bird being shown will not be allowed to be cooped out with out all tags being inspected and coop out will not be allowed until after all awards are handed out. And for the sales area I will have someone posted at the door at all time and the chickens are not allowed to be taken out with out the owners permission. And something like no cages to be taken in to carrier sold bird out in only birds allowed out the door, or something like that me and a few of us organizing the stock are still working out the fine details for the matter of protecting everyone investments and cages. If anyone here has any suggestions I would sure love to hear them. Well later ya'll mawchickkidie

Okcarla, 11 of the silkies hatched and 7 of the call ducks. They are adorable!! We had problems with the electricity and several storms while they were incubating, so it's a wonder any hatched!! A friend of mine is bringing me about 60 eggs tomorrow, I begged her to take my incubator to her house, but she insists that I do them. So the addiction lives on!!

Foghorn Leghorn, That's Wonderful! You had a great hatch! You had an excellent hatch on the silkies and it's extremely difficult to hatch call duck eggs ... you're a pro! Congratulations!

I sold all my call ducks at the Cement auction. We need the pen space for some of these chickens & turkeys & maybe some peacocks (if they hatch) that Gerald & I decided we want to raise. Well, we do still have some call duck eggs left in the incubator, and a couple of ducklings in the brooder left, but when they go ... no more ducks for us

I'm sad to see them go.

60 more eggs to incubate? It sounds like you are a hatch-a-holic for SURE!

I went to the Cement auction and talked to Carla and her nice hubby about my silkies. Carla was nice enough to 'splain how to tell the roos from the hens.

I have six (bought two trios the last sale) and I'm lucky to have two roos and four hens! YAY!

Bought five of the most beautiful black rosecomb bantams....the roos are having to get acquainted. I forgot the meaning of 'like a banty rooster'.

BOY! Do they have 'tude. Don't even back down from the peafowl! LOL!! Too funny.
