Sooner, I will bring my favorite paring knife and if we are satisfied that the potatoes can be sufficiently scrubbed, we can just cut them into fries. If for some reason it isn't easy to get them scrubbed to our satisfaction, we can peel them before cutting into fries. It will be "healthier," as in have more vitamins

, if our deep fried potatoes retain the skin.

OK, someone sent me this email at work so I must share. Stimpy might have wrote this:

Economic stimulus package!

"This year, taxpayers will receive an Economic Stimulus payment. This is a very exciting new program that I will explain using the Q and A format:

"Q. What is an Economic Stimulus Payment?*
"A. It is money that the federal government will send to taxpayers.

"Q. Where will the government get this money?*
"A. From taxpayers.

"Q. So the government is giving me back my own money?*
"A. No, they are borrowing it from China . You children are expected to repay the Chinese.

"Q. What is the purpose of this payment?*
"A. The plan is that you will use the money to purchase a
high-definition TV set, thus stimulating the economy.

"Q. But isn't that stimulating the economy of China ?*
"A. Shut up."

Below is some helpful advice on how to best help the US economy by spending your stimulus check wisely:

If you spend that money at Wal-Mart, all the money will go to China .

If you spend it on gasoline it will go to Hugo Chavez, the Arabs and Al Queda

If you purchase a computer it will go to Taiwan .

If you purchase fruit and vegetables it will go to Mexico , Honduras, and Guatemala (unless you buy organic).

If you buy a car it will go to Japan and Korea.

If you purchase prescription drugs it will go to India

If you purchase heroin it will go to the Taliban in Afghanistan

If you give it to a charitable cause, it will go to Nigeria.

And none of it will help the American economy.

We need to keep that money here in America . You can keep the money in America by spending it at yard sales, going to a baseball game, or spend it on prostitutes, beer (domestic ONLY), or tattoos, since those are the only businesses still in the US.

Ive worked in Produce for walmart for a few years and now that hte USDA requires us to label where our produce comes from, it can be suprising how much is not from America, especialy this time of year. However it changes constantly, one minute Tomatoes or Anaheim peppers are from Mexico, the next day from America. At least during the summer our Tomatoes are all out of Arkansas and our soft fruit from California and watermelons from Texas.

Unfortunetly unless you grow your own, you do eat veggies from other countrys. It doesnt scare me but I sure would rather be buying American produce if I cant grow it myself. Ive put it off long enough, im getting hte grass cut then we are working on getting the garden going friday. We absolutely LOVE squash and tomatoes from our garden and the jalapenoes are great. I just hope my bell peppers do good this year. GOnna try some Poblanos and several pepper varieties. I cant grow enough tomatoes, we know too many people who dont have the land or the ability to grow there own and get our extras.

I am glad that the USDA is finally requiring a country of origin on produce. Now, if they would just require it on all food, we could feel safer in eating what is in the store.

Of course, having country of origin isn't any guarantee that the food is safe. Honey from China, for instance, has sometimes been "laundered" by shipping it through a different country, thereby creating a different country of origin. The truth is figured out when a country ships more honey than it produces.

The honey on the shelf at Sam's says it is pure honey (a good thing, since some "honey" contains corn syrup and you don't realize that until you read the back label), however, their label also says the honey can be from the U.S., Argentina, Brazil, India and a few other places I can't recall.

Preparation and quality seeds are the key to a successful garden.

I spend at least a week tilling and re-tilling the soil until it's a nice, soft loam.

Then I make sure that I have the freshest seeds possible from a quality seed dealer.

Then, I plant the seeds with loving care, making sure that they are at the correct depth and that the rows are the just the right distance apart.

I water them when they need it and make sure that they have just the right kind and amount of mulch. And if God smiles on me, in about 2 short weeks,

VOILA

stickers & weeds !

Stimpy,
I am trying something different this year and plan to begin with "started seeds". The little tubes of peat moss are sprouting cucumbers and squash on my table. I just hope that it gives them half a chance before the bermuda grass moves in on the garden. It seems like no matter what I do to prepare the garden, it doesn't take long before it is overcome by bermuda grass and chokeweed. I should have moved my garden location to my chicken yard last year, because they had totally decimated the bermuda grass - better than any weed-killer or hand weeding could ever accomplish. I could have fenced off my garden full of weeds for the chickens this spring and we would have both been happier.
