Hey guys

Still sick. Got up this morning with 102 fever. I cleaned the coop at 6:00 a.m. before it got hot. Called my doc and she said if I'm not better by wednesday to call back. So I took this morning to get some paperwork caught up. Medicare is trying to stiff me for an ambulance bill. So I sent them an appeal form and a doctor's note and every other dang thing they asked for. That's 600.00 I do not have.

Donna, sorry to hear about your Mom. I'm praying for you. Your sig line says it all. Hang onto Jesus, He'll get ya through. Glad you family is all there.

Still have to plant the darn squash. *sigh* I can't imagine going out there, but I need the dang squash! there's a ton of careless weed in the way. That stuff makes a trunk. Yay. I hope I survive this summer....I'm really dragging, and it's just started.

HOwdy folks!

Henny - to cull w/o eating unless the animal is sick or such is not what I do. I believe we are supposed to be responsible for the things He gives us and use them correctly...having said that I believe praire dogs are meant to be shot and left there for other animals to eat.

Welcome new folks...

gotta get back to work

Golly, it's been awhile since I have posted on this thread. How is everyone?

My computer is saying Tuesday temps are going to be 103. Can chickens even survive that? My are panting there hearts out just in the lower 90's. How do you keep your chickens cool? All of mine are in the shade, but still with no breeze it is just dry stagnant heat. I give them super cool water throughout the day, other than that I have no clue what to do for them.

I have some that are in movable pens with lots of access to breezes. Those I move under a shade tree. My layers are in a large pen almost to the point of free range and they seem to find their own cool spots under shade trees.

The rest I just turn loose and let my dog watch them. The turkeys seem to like concrete on my back porch.

We haven't lost any to heat yet, but we are new at this so don't really have much of a track record.

i have turned all mine loose to free range even all my 4 week olds i got from cackle.i have about 15 big cedar trees on the ajoining lots to mine an they have plenty of shade.been keepin the little pool filled up an my big americanas have even been standin in it once the ducks splash the water down.it sure is hot

That is the same camp that my daughter went to for 4H, they have a pretty cool slide at the pool! Nice camp ground from what I saw.

well, since i haven't gotten the run done, and the coop is attached to the house, we opened the window and brought them into the hall, so they are in AC, and for the first time, all of them are getting along- they seem to finally gotten used to each other- then in the livingroom where it is the coolest are my 2 silkies and Nimmy the d'ccle is sitting in my lap, she was panting so bad that i was afraid i'd lose her-

donna- praying for you and the family-

everyone stay cool!

I will be off in an hour to go home to check on mine. I am always amazed at the ones that tend to sit in the hen house in the floor during the heat of the day. I would think it would be cooler out in the open.

Another thing that I do is spray the pen with the water hose to give them cool dirt to lay in.

I would love to have my own little prairie dog town on my place. But, with only 8 acres (one of which is a pond), I think it would be irresponsible and not very popular amongst my neighbors.

Now, if I had 'bout 250 acres.

Henny - Don't you send them a single $ !!! Just keep sending
them what paperwork they ask for. Bill's Mom passed June 1st
"Last Year" and this past spring we started getting ambulance
bills in the mail. We contacted the hospice bunch and "they"
ended up having to explain to the hospital "how to even file
the paperwork"....... You need to contact the Medicaid bunch
and ask them to look through the paperwork and notify the
hospital. Unless you already had Power of Attorney, there's
no reason for them to be sending "you" the bill, unless you
signed off as the responsible party from the get-go.

Gees, it's gettin' hot. Pa-Pa and Kendra got out there
and put another layer of shade cloth over the two flight pens
that get afternoon and evening sun. We're checking all of them
fairly often and have a pile of water bottles filled and frozen
that we can take out there and put in front of fans. Guess I
can get out in the 5th wheel and rig up my "ice maker" that I
bought "for going to the lake" and fire it up for the danged
chickens............LOL

Take care and stay cool !
