Well, could be worse. You could have bought a run down HUD foreclosure like we did. We've put thousands into it and we're STILL working on it. And we haven't even started hauling off the previous folks' junk.

We'll have it finished some day, I reckon. Now that my highly skilled brother is laid off he's going to be working on it for me. Gonna come up from DFW every other week and put a week of work on it until it is done or he finds another job.

I think an offer to take roosters is one of those "be careful what you ask for, you might get it kind of things" How old do they need to be? I will start trying to sort my spring hatched birds.

Jeannie, I love my Great Pyraneese and she is wonderful with all the chickens, rabbits, goats, etc. I recommend however that you get an older one rather than a puppy - if you can find one that has been raised around poultry. We had to rehome the puppy my husband got me after the pup got too energetic rounding up the birds. Bad Karma with the neighbors when they stop and ask if you know your dog is carrying a bird around in its mouth. (that Great Pyr has however been a blessing to friends who raise horses, because she comes to get them when a mare is ready to foal.)

Also be aware that they are nocternal barkers and like to roam. We had our Great Pyr confined to a chain link fenced yard and she decided her territory wasn't sufficiently large. She would dig out under the fence, become a boneless flounder and get under the fence and start running. We had our phone number engraved on her collar and got several calls from people two miles in each direction, before we put her in a fence with a hot wire at the bottom. I have to say though that I haven't lost any birds to predators in the yard where the great Pry is confined. My losses to skunks have been in a different yard where I don't have a dog.

well i like to get them at at least 12 to 14 weeks old at least.but the age really doesnt matter..i have several farms ive traded out a few pullets for all the roosters they raise the last couple years an a few that just gives them to me to be rid of them.mostly only large fowl in every color but white. i came back from poops with almost 150 in april.not all from poops we stopped at the jones auction an bought abunch plus 6 pigs for $20 each.i buy alot of them when they are cheap
