Wow. That's great to know! How long can you keep them that way and still hatch them?

I will never keep them over 10 days for hatching.

Lol

What should I make my screen name subtitle now???

Grace - In our town, if a skunk is coming that close to a place of residence, they do 'permanentyl dispose' of them. I'm sure they did with the one you caught.

I don't really worry about it. I figure they can't get 'em all.

Seriously, though, many of my birds are exposed most of the time. I think maybe I lost one (a duck) to a hawk in the last two years and they are everywhere here. I think part of it is because I have a really good rooster who does a great job keeping watch, part of it is they are scared of my turkeys and dogs, and part of it is just plain luck.

I'm sure I'll lose a few eventually, but I think of it as a trade-off.

Thanks for the warning, though.

Wow that IS a lot of hawks!

I have seen them flying overhead from time to time, and at that point I just dance like the Chickendales and they never come back!

Seriously though, my biggest threat comes from coyotes...I HATE those boogers! Anyone want to hang out at my place and call & shoot em?

Any more they are not worth enough to do it. Back in the 70s I could get near 50 dollars for Coyote.

Just build your pens strong and you should be fine.

I candle eggs at day 7, 14 and then about 17 before going into the hatcher.

Soonerguy - Seven days is when you can really tell if they're fertile or not. But I'm a horrible horrible person and check mine every three days. Which you should NOT do! But keep in mind if its a darker shell like a maran, or maybe a guinea egg, you're gonna have alot harder time telling.

Carla - Did you find me a little Silkie baby in your batch???
