Hey okies.

I have a sick 4 week old. She is gaping her mouth open. Sneezing, and cant stand up. All the others seem fine. Any one have any ideas what I can do for her. She is on pine pellet bedding. Don't think she is eating or drinking much since she can't stand up. Last poop looked ok. Thanks Cindy

Artsy how old are your birds? My birds range from 5 months to a little over a year just make sure the coop is closed up with my standards and with my smaller breeds like the Cochins and Silkies I put a 60 watt bulb in their coop in case they need it.

We are just running their brooder heat lamp in the coop... since it gets chilly at night even though they have " outgrown" needing one... Its been helpful since we had an incident a few weeks back with the girls getting too cold and smoothering each other

Hope you had fun. Sounds like Dachshunds did!

I had a great time at Fletcher with my very first sale! Four pretty little chicks out of my BO roo and Americana hens. I had already decided to PO if they were under a dollar. They were pretty, but I've seen chicks this size go for as little as a quarter. I was delighted when the bidding got over $2, and they sold for $3. The lady who bought them said she was excited about them because of their colors.

So, success on the first try! I know it isn't much, just 12 bucks, but it is another step on the journey for us.

And, of course, it is always fun to visit with Al. I don't think I've yet had a conversation with him where I didn't learn something.

Oh, and Carla. It looked to me like it was mostly fresh meat there tonight. I don't think I recognized more than 3 or 4 people, and two of them were sitting with me! So, it does look like they are attracting new clientele. Not much to sell, though. I was the last out of ten lots.

We do not use a light or heat at all. The person who told me this could have been wrong, but I favor taking elders advise. We do not because someone pointed out to me that using a light can cause a lowered immune system, and a dependence on a heat. The dependence on a heat source is not a bad thing, unless during the winter you lose power for an extended period of time, like the ice storm. They said during this time if we had been using a heat source the chickens would then die or become seriously ill. No chick is outside in the cold, they are in the house. We put a heavy layer of pine shavings on the floor and in the nest boxes. Some of our hens prefer bedding on the floor at night when it is cold, versus their roost.

We close up our coop year round at night. We do this for varmits, and dduring the winter for heat. Our coop intentionally small open areas for ventilation.

I ran one in the the coop all winter last year. Don't know if they needed it, but we had some very cold nights out there.

well, the coop is 4 x8, i closed the window, and the door has half hardware cloth so i hung a blanket over it- i have 6 standards in there (just about 6 months old), i might put a heater at the door, not in the coop but pumping some warmer air in there- my younger ones are still in the house
