The Dept of Ag doesn't do that at every auction, but they do try and spot check the birds at auctions, since it wouldn't take much for a few infected birds at an auction to spread something across the state by virtue of people attending the auctions and possibly taking home infected birds. They are only doing tests for Avian flu and the NPIP test for pullorum and typhoid. I wish they tested for some of the things that cause the upper respiratory infections in our birds, but I don't know how easy a test like that would be to administer.

I might be the blame to that one. They asked me where the guy I got my turkeys from sold at. I knew he sold there and Jones and maybe Blarcherd, sorry guys.

Oh, it wasn't that big a deal. Just kinda creepy opening a letter like that from the state when I had never asked them to check any birds in the first place.

I do share Cammie's healthy skepticism about their motive, however. Government agencies don't tend to be on the side of the little guy. While I applaud genuine efforts to clean up the poultry environment for everyone, quite often such things are used as an excuse to shut down the little guy.

Hopefully it is something as simple as concern about recent flu outbreaks and they just want to monitor the situation. I seriously doubt you had any real effect.

1/4cc for bantams and 1/2cc for large fowl, I give mine orally on a little piece of bread.

The Ag dept. is supposed to have a state vet for inspection at every critter auction. But when there are a few to cover in one area they usually just go to the largest one like OKC West or the Stockyards. There are way too few people to cover a lot of auctions.

The Ivomec I have is injectible...but I give it orally? I just want to be sure...

That is how it was recommended to me many years ago by an older keeper. He had way more birds then I do and had been keeping birds for over 50 years.

Oh I know... I am glad to see they're checking things out. I would hate to bring home birds and end up losing my already-established flock. I just get paranoid, worry about people who are bored or overzealous with their 'power'... I worked for one of those. Lol

OK Lightning - Did they ever decide what was up with your birds??

Nope, not 5, just three. The eggs came from Leon Valley Trading Company and the paperwork is shows that they came from show quality stock. No idea on the sex of them yet. The other two blues are Self Blue OEGB and are also from show quality stock according to the paperwork.

Giving the ivomec on a small piece of bread would sure be easier than picking up each bird and prying their beak open to drop a few drops into the mouth. Great tip.

I agree that the Department of Ag works with small poultry owners rather than against them. When I had pullorum in my flock last year, they gave me options of how to proceed. They did quarantine my flock once they tested positive for pullorum (salmonella variety), but I support quarantine while there are issues in a flock, because it protects others from a flock owner who might decide to sell sick birds to unsuspecting folks. Oklahoma Lightening is the poster child for what happens when someone sells birds that turn out to be sick - she is out the money she spent on the turkeys, plus all the money she spent trying to get rid of whatever was killing the turkeys.

Hey P & B, when do the honey bees go into hibernation for the winter? Why would a bunch of bees keep swarming around us when we were working on the new chicken condo when there are no flowers or anything that I would think would attract them???? I do not want to hurt them or bother them, I am just trying to find a common ground with them. They were landing on all of us, not threatening.

It was great PnB, my wife doest a pretty good job of it. Much better than her mothers chicken grease and dumplings. Wife is sitting in the floor right now playing with baby chicks. Gotta get them out and into the shop tommarow.

Engie - That is kind of scary. I do not like bees at all.

This week, since the warm up, we've had wasps all over the drive, and honey bees all over our front porch. They were trying to get in the house around the glass door!

Well, I did not want to hurt them because I know their populations are down, and I realize they do not want to sting me because it means their life. However, I do not know if I am allergic to them, and I know my DH is. I just do not know why they chose to congregate around us. They never have before.
