I have the same problem with my daughters birthday. Not all the family but mostly on my husbands side think it is all right to just get her one small gift. But last year came the real kicker when we went to Christmas at his parents and his sister (who is very well off and was guilty of the one present) didn't even get her one gift at all.

I wish the gift thing for Christmas would go away. Seriously. At least, I think the gifts for adults would go away. The "reason for the season" isn't what you can buy for each other, it's what you can DO for each other, such as loving each other, spending time together, relishing family and friends relationships and bonds. I can see getting presents for children, but more like what my family does during Sukkot and Hanukkah, which are small *useful* presents, not big money on the toy of the season or name brand whatever. When the gifts and the $$ spent get in the way of the "spirit of the season", then I think those things need to go away.

Of course, that *doesn't* mean that I don't still want chickens for my birthday

Amen Sister Amen! Through out the year prior to the "christmas day" we make mention of things we would like to have... Then Jason and I conspire and decide on one "big" thing for the family it has to be something that will benefit the whole family ... When grandparents ask what it is they can help get for the kids we let them in on our family idea... This year its a WII, So Jasons dad and step mom wanted to buy the Wii console, My mom pitched in and bought us the Wii Fit package deal, Jason and I will pitch in and buy the added extras(like controllers and such). The kids are going to be so excited!

This will be our first game console of anything, so in a lil way I am nervous but also know that when its to cold outside my kids need an outlet that will keep them moving I will have a option for them Plus I am one of those evil parents that kick their kids outside when the sun is out,.... hence why you dont see my kids on the computer even though we have one...LOL.

Next year I am already plotting.... Of making it a Carhart Christmas.... Where we each get Carhart over alls and winter boots so there is no excuse to feed and water chickens in the cold weather..... DO you all think that will fly? HA HA HA

I need some of those overalls and boots... ah well, I'll just keep on bundling up

I need some 3x or relaxed fit 2x carharts please!

Oh...are BYCers not included in the family gifting idea?
big_smile.png

that is cool...my boys would want it to be camo ever time! My poor wife just doesn't understand. The constant wrestling matches are also alien to her...why do they just smack each other? Cuz they are boys! So I smack them back! nah...working on the correct timing of smacking still...

Too funny, this sounds like what my husband and I do. However, if there is something that my husband or I need/really would like to have, we hide it and then tell the other where it is in the store and then the other goes and buys it if it is still there or can be found, LOL. So we are still a little surprised at christmas, not really knowing if the other found it or not. We too are getting the Wii for our daughter (probably husband too, he likes gaming) and have had some of the grandparents help to pitch in and my sisters are helping with the games. Those things are expensive! To help the money go further, we went to the Black friday craziness. The first time ever for us. We got a Wii console package that came with two of everything (the controllers, numchuks, sensor thingys, and all the stuff that you normally have to buy afterwards plus it came with four extra game disk packages) from Sams for $350. So then the grandparents paid us back and they didn't even have to step out of their house to get into the messy shopping of Christmas. I myself never had a game system and don't know the first thing about them, except they are expensive and the next big one will be out in a year or two and then will be out of date, LOL. I grew up on Computers, my first was a Commodore 64, for those of you who don't know what those are, it was like a keyboard that you hooked up to the TV and then had these cartridges that went into the back of them. My favorite game was cleaning teeth, hehehe.

I also agree about the gifting. That is what I was trying to say we were teaching our daughter last year, but it still seemed sad that the adults had gifts to open (SIL and BIL), but she didn't. At least they could have kept their gifts at home and opened them there for each other instead of bringing them over and flaunting them in front of a 7 year old. Anyways, some people were just not taught manners. On my family's side, we all get together and discuss the things that will help each other out that the kiddos need. We might all get one toy for each child or something the child is wanting, but then we mostly get clothes for all of the kiddos to help each other out and make it more special for the kiddos. I myself try to shop throughout the year hitting clearance stands for clothes for all of my nieces and nephews (some are also close friends kiddos I feel like they are also part of our family we even call our friends aunt and uncles), normally buying larger sizes for them to grow into. I have been telling my sisters and brothers for years don't get me anything, because I don't really need anything lets just make it about the kiddos.

My dad still has a Commodore 64 in his shed. Oh, and one even older than that. He's an engineer, what can ya expect?

Of course, he was also raised on a farm. When my black star, Lucky, was jumped on by a Saint Bernard, he splinted her leg and wing. She's regained complete use of both

One year we did family board games... I bought the game candy land(even though we were well past that stage) and bought a crap load of candy and junk and boxed it all up and we had a CandyLand Christmas... The kids loved it...

I get a kick out of trying to make it some what "themed" by using imagination lol

PS Who here likes Ginger Cookies? Taste similar to Ginger Snaps but not as crunchy?

That is a great idea! I need to think about doing something like that! When we were kids I would always make joke gifts, or trick my siblings into believing they were getting something else. Like using a bigger box and stuffing it with filler and rocks having smaller box then smaller box, until it was they opened a gift that was necklace or something small, hehehe. I was the jokster in the family. I haven't done that with my own kids, but I might have to bring that one back, hmmmmmmm. The possibilities are endless and oh so much fun!

Just sent the DH to take the DD to ballet, yeah I can just do more housework and relax. I have driven way too much this week. I can have a break and rest up for the drive to Shawnee. Ooooo what time do you guys suggest I get there? I can't afford anything too pricey, but I would like to hopefully find something. I am hoping to find some good hens that may be laying eggs soon. We are running out of the eggs that I had left over from my babies,
