Well, yes and no. If I call in late, I'll be able to treat the Silkie before he gets home from taking his son to have his leg brace re-sized (after all day testing in Shawnee). It'll be close to 6 before they get done with that.

Who is his Doctor in Shawnee? What is the leg brace for?

I can't remember the doctor's name... and his son has mild form Cerebral Palsy caused by premature birth.

How come a doctor in Shawnee, no offense I love my town but they usually have way better doctors in the city.

Oh, I see the confusion... I wasn't clear on what was for whom

J went to Shawnee for an MMPI... a psychiatric exam required by CLEET for a firearms course he's gonna take. He needed a new one (they require one within a year of taking these courses). The choices were NWOKC, Norman, or Shawnee... and Shawnee had an opening today, which is normally J's day off work.

The doctor for Christian's cerebal palsy is in OKC, and his brace will be fitted by an orthopedic pediatric specialist in Choctaw. So J had to go to Shawnee for his own test, then pick up Christian in about 30 minutes to go to the doctor's office in OKC, then out to Choctaw to the specialist to get his brace fitted... which I why I said they won't be done until around 6ish... the fitting is at 4:30pm and the nurse said to expect it to take at least an hour.

Wry neck, according to the websites and discussion on BYC, is when the head is twisted/bent. Can be caused by vitamin/mineral deficiency (hence the use of multivitamins), or some suggest it could be hereditary or even a head injury caused by a peck to the head (which would primarily affected birds with vaulted skulls, like these silkies). The worse the case of wry neck, the higher the likelyhood that the chick won't survive it. They become unable to eat/drink, running around in circles, unable to stand up straight, etc.

Odd question... can I feed handfeeding formula for parrots to the chick for supplementation? I've got leftover Kaytee Exact handfeeding formula powder in the freezer. If not, no biggie... but I was thinking "extra calories". I also have little jars of baby food (parrot treats

)

Yes, giving it the Kaytee formula is a good idea. I've just successfully worked with a 6 or 7 month old Silkie who had limberneck. I imagine it's the same thing you're talking about. She had it very bad; was completely down with it. I fed her Vitamin E twice a day and force fed her for about a week. I figured it was a peck to the head for her, as she has a very high vaulted skull. I got tired of doing all that and she was back on her feet and eating when she could get to the trough. For about another week, I'd gently untangle her head and put her beak in the trough--she ate hungrily. She still stood on her head a lot, with her face twisted around and skygazing. For over a week now, she's looked normal; in fact, sometimes I have to look closely to see which one she is and there's only one other her color in the pen.

I think the most important thing was keeping her from starving to death, as at first all she could do was scoot backwards and stand on her head.

Cammie, your painting is really great! I think you should spend more time doing those artistic things, you have a natural talent!

Robin, congratulations on your degree! There is a man that goes to my church who is a graphic design teacher. His work always amazes me! - it's so precise! That must be why your paintings are so good, too

Okla-doodle-doo, sorry about your pigeons! I would cull or at least seperate any that show signs of being sick. I hope it clears up soon!

I'm sending you a PM.

Thanks Grace. Its hard to cull. They look great till the head starts twisting. At that point I jerk them out and feed the hawks. There may some good news. I talked to a guy at Foy"s today and he said if its PVM there is no cure(Thats not the good news!),you can vaccinate and let it run its course and thats about it. The vaccine is over $50. but the symptoms are also the same for more common paratyphoid and it can be cured with cheaper antibiotis. So I am going that route first. But have to have the meds shipped in so it will be monday before I can start. I did put them on apple cider vinegar which is supposed to help also. But just went out and there was another one twisting its head around!Sure is discouraging.

Okay, I am at least 20 pages behind (at 75/pg, do the math

) and there is no way that I will ever catch up. In fact I can't even remember when I posted last but I wanted to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year while I have a second. I did sell 31 roosters and butcher 48 birds (7 lb average and they taste really goooood!) since I posted last. I'm liking not having to go to the feed store as often and so is my wallet. I have missed chatting with you guys. Take care ya'll.
