It don't matter much, I get regular updates from Jeannie.

Hey STIMPY.............is it BAD that our egg production is 50% of what you have??

I've turned off the incubator anyway. The hens are just getting back into shape, and I have a dog that is helping herself to breakfast in the hen house pretty regularly. So I really don't have any idea how many eggs I'm getting. When I'm not hatching I either feed them to the dogs or toss them any way.

I am curious as to why you don't use the eggs for human consumption. Are there just too many when the hens are laying well, or do you prefer "store bought"

My dog doesn't particularly like dry dog food and the only way I can get her to eat it before the chickens do, is if I break some eggs on top of her food. Most of the time, I feed her raw meat rather then dog food - but even before I started that she prefered leftovers to dog food. She came to us with that bad trait and since she has always had chickens around her, I decided it was preferable to do whatever it takes to get her to eat her dogfood, rather than feed chickens dog food all the time. Dog food is more expensive, pound per pound, than layer feed.

I don't eat many eggs at all, and I prefer that they not be fertilized. I normally keep the layer flock inaccessible to the roosters. Lately tho, since I'm not hatching, I've just let them run together. Because they're fertile, I don't want them for the table, and since I don't have them separated, I don't want them to hatch. So, I feed them to the dogs or toss them.

My wife bought eggs for the holidays from the store for the first time in a long time. She bought eggs at the store on the same day that I spent over a hundred bucks on chicken feed. Mama ain't happy 'bout that.

I have to second that Buster, great post. I'm going to the library tomorrow evening and see if I can get The Omnivor's Dilemma, and Animal, Vegetable, Miracle. There are going to be some changes this spring at my place as far as growing our own food.

I use to have a gigantic garden and raised all of our meat. I drifted away from that over the years, but am slowly getting back into it.I have lived in the country since I was in the 9th grade, but I am willing to learn something new. If Joel Salatin has a following and people want to learn more of what he is teaching, more power to him.

Goood Morning Okies!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Happy Monday!! We are on the count down to Christmas!!! I am looking forward to a short week! Does everyone have your shopping done? I have just a couple of gift certificates and a bottle of wine to pick up.

It's gonna be a great day!

Good morning all! The temp isnt too bad out, still above freezing. The kids are down to the last 2 days of school before Christmas break, all my shopping is done. I think this week is going to be good and peaceful. I am hoping that the rain skips us. Every time it rains then we get freezing temps it knocks out my electric. I cant afford that this year, have too many babies in the bator and more hatching this week and some already in the brooder. I have got to get me a few generators. One for the house and the other for my chicks and soon to be chicks.

I was reading through last nights posts. Faerie, if you need any help with incubating just ask any of us. My first hatch was going great(I also had lots of help from Luvs2garden), then my son thought that the temp was too high in the middle of hatching so he turned it down, he didnt know that little adjustments went a long way. By the time I realized what he had done the temp was 85 in my incubator and all those that had hatched were wet and cold. that also pretty much killed all those that hadnt hatched.

Nobody touched my incubators after that (except my DH and he doesnt anymore)
