SMFMF that one red turken looks like it has the body of a hen! Can't really see its head clearly so don't know about the comb and wattles. But it sure has a round bottom like a hen. The others look like EE roos. Thay are sure a nice bunch of big ones. They will be good dumplings thats for sure.Wish I was closer!Congrats on the dry pens, you are lucky.

I am very impressed with the lack of mud in your pens.

Do you have grass/straw/hay/shavings/something else in there to keep them out of the mud and if so, how deep did you have to layer it to keep it from sinking into the mud?

At one point there was a light layer of grass hay in the pens, but the birds have just about scratched it all out. I was really shocked to see that the pens were not muddy. I have been leaving before sunrise and getting home after sunset, so I don't see much in the pens anyways.

I just noticed the lack of mud when I was posting these pics. I took them as it started to snow Tuesday and didn't really pay attention to the ground. That is when I realized there was no hay in the coop and had to take care of it in capris and flip flops.

I guess it just helps that the pen is on a slight slope. Usually it is slightly muddy, but not this time. Maybe it is because of the net over the top. That is a new addition. It is actually a net for a trampoline that I sewed together to cover the pen. It works really well and has a zipper for tossing in treats.

A net for a trampoline - now that is a clever idea of what to use for a net on top. It would be large and strong and as you indicated, it can be sewn together to make the right size for the top of pen.
I am going to start trolling Craigslist for those. Thanks!

Beth, keep him awhile, quiet and let him heal- if you decide to cull, you can send him here...yeah, i don't need a roo, but maybe extensive nursing and r& r will help? I got a silkie pullet in August, couldn't walk well, with care she now only has a small limp, but it took time, daily massages and such....

Im trying to let him be... I just want the flock to be safe...
My vet said if the state thinks its something bad then I may be
in a spot where everyone has to be culled....
I'm off to the feed store. What should I buy to worm
my flock? I have used a garlic bulb in the water in the past
but I think I need something better...
Verm-x? wazine? what should I have on my list?

I do not like paper in my coop... It comes just like cedar in the
bags and at first is just as good but it seems like you need to use
more of it more often...

Well I'm finally getting to use my Christmas present. My DH got me a huge KitchenAid Artisan Mixer that is red! FedEx finally delivered it this morning. Lauren decided that the first thing that should be made are sugar cookies. I also discovered that my jerky gun makes a good cookie press.

Ok now I'm confused. I am installing a new antivirus software and I can't use the smilies. The link doesn't work for me. Oh well!

i finally broke down and bought some pine shavings for the run, hoping it will help give them some better footing than 3 inches of muck....when spring gets here, i'll get some sand and see how that works-

prayer request, just found out my son in law in tulsa got fired Saturday- worked for cameron trucking and they wanted him to take a load to Texas in the middle of the snow in a non-qualified truck, so he tells his boss if he gets pulled over it will be his licence and a fine- not the company, so didn't take the load- so they fire him...sigh... anyone hiring in tulsa? he is a trucker, but wants local....

You are going to love the new Kitchen Aid mixer. I have a 6 quart that is cobalt blue. My only suggestion is to not be so impressed by the power that you decide to mix bread dough using the paddle rather than the bread hook. We make cinnamon rolls as a fund raiser every year and my mixer worked fine with the paddle the couple of years, but then I broke gears in it two years in a row by not using the bread hook. The first time it cost me $60 to get it fixed. The second time, it was $160 and in the shop for more than 6 months while parts were ordered and re-ordered. Needless to say, when I used it this year to make 10 batches of bread dough for the cinnamon rolls, I used the bread hook, the correct speed and let it cool off between batches. Also, if you find you are not using it very often, be sure to at least turn it on for a few minutes every month, so the oil in the gears gets warmed up and stirred around.
