I am watching this new program called Pickers on the history channel, it's about 2 guy's traveling the country looking for cool antique type stuff, and buy them.
It's a pretty good show.

Yes it did. I've been reading it and still thinking about getting some birds to give it a try. Just enough to stock our freezer. I'm not sure I want to go the expense of getting setup for processing, we're not looking to turn it into a money maker, just want good food & want to try to avoid the chemical chickens at the market.

So I guess at this point I need to find a processor before I go further.

Dang! And the ransom was going to be a big amount too, something to retire early with. I guess I will let him go.

My neighbor down the road uses a metal shed for his coup, probably the cheapest one you could find. He just leaves the doors open, that's it's ventilation.

Hey folks...hope everyone is healthy, wealthy, and wise. Oh my bad...maybe healthy but I know this site hasn't got wealthy and wise folks cause we're addicts. LOL

Anyway, I have a question. How do you get the eggs clean after gathering them and mud and poop has stained them? Is there some kind of spray or something that won't hurt the egg or people when they eat it? I'm embarassed how they look when I sell them. I use a rag and pot scratcher and they still look awful. Help!

Also, is anyone else having to wade mud to take care of your flock. I thought I was going to have to call a tow truck to get myself unstuck! It is aweful. I can't hardly wait until we get to move and get on higher ground with a new game plan for our pens and shed.

THANK YOU FOR PICS AND INFO. It certainly has me thinking and planning.

By the way Al I've been working on a plan for us. I think I've finally got my DH going on this. He is always so hesitant when it's something that he's not sure of how to do. I told him I was going to sink or swim building this thing. LOL

I can't do that... I live in an area where they're not legal to own. You can own a hog, or a pack of dogs and never pick up their poop, or whatever... but chickens aren't legal. So I need one solid side to face the fence where people can see into my back yard... the back isn't much of a problem considering my back yard butts up to a creek. I enlisted my brother in law to help us because I'm a weakling and J can't do it himself, but if it would be financially feasible to get two metal sheds instead of building 1 wood one, then I'd like to do it in such a way that it would be ventilated and have plenty of sunlight inside. They'll have a "run", but it'll only be one side of the coop that exits into the run. I figure that I can replace the metal sliding doors and frame 2x4s with welded wire... but not sure what else I should, or could, do to make it more "livable".

Without those doors open you're going to need some massive vents to keep it from becoming an oven in the summer.
