POOPS on May 1st!!!

I am so eggcited! hehehe of and there will be at least two of us but I am hoping I can talk my daughter and one of my friends into going.

Finally got caught up after not being on for a day or so.

First off, Al glad your back, safe and sound. Don welcome back, hope this means your feeling better and life is smoother.

Hoo Doo about the Marans, here is my philosophy on chickens for what ever it is worth. Chickens are wonderful and when you find a kind you really like you should go for it, but be smart about it. Chickens are not people, they are not the smartest things walking, they are suseptible to illnesses and predation which means a $50-75 dollar chicken is worth about $0 if it dies or is eaten by predators. Last year, and many people here can verify this, I spent probably over $500 on peafowl and bourbon red turkeys and you know how many I have starting the year with. One peacock and one tom. It sucks! I also lost all but 6 out of 50 of my chickens I purchased last year. It seems from what I have read from your post your like the rest of us and money is not just flowing in so the point is unless you are really committed to these type of birds anymore then $10-15 is to much.

I would have loved to go to the Cement auction but going to spend the evening with Mr. Man and make italian soup and bake a loaf of bread and have a quiet evening. But I do plan to g

Well going to go meet my man at the casino, maybe I can make some more chicken money.

Yeah right!

Hope everyone has a wonderful day!

Thanks for the input, sjarvis00 and BarnSwallow. I think part of the problem the guy down the row had was racially motivated. When the family looked at my chickens, the child said to his mother, "Mira, mamá. La señora tiene gallinas. Se puede comprar?" (Look mommy. The lady has some chickens. Can we buy some?

My Spanish is poor, but when I answered, "Sí, hombre pequeño. Las gallinas están a la venta." (Yes, little guy. The chickens are for sale), everyone in the family looked at me and smiled. Really smiled, like they were thrilled that I was trying (in my feeble Spanish) to speak to them. I asked, "¿Cuánto tiempo esperando aquí?" (How long have you been waiting here?) The mom in the group told me they arrived at 6:00 a.m., and so far I was the only one to speak to them. Dad paid me for the chickens, and I opened the cage so he could unload them. They didn't have a cage in their car, so chickens were held on laps as they drove off. I know the birds were sold to the right people. The son asked his father how the chickens would be used. Los pollos son para poner los huevos. El gallo es para la cena. - I think that means the hens are for laying eggs and the rooster is for supper. I've got enough laying hens right now, and the rooster, well, I would have put him in the freezer for later if I hadn't found a buyer today.

My parents immigrated from post-war Germany. My first husband immigrated from Santiago, Chile. My DH's mother immigrated from Holland. Our youngest daughter's married name is Gomez. I guess I'm hung up on the bad vibes I got from the guy down the row. Jimminy Crickets, why can't we look for the similarities instead of the differences?

It sounds like you made a honest and fair sale, you received what you requested in terms of money and a family is happy. I agree. We are all more similar than different. Thanks for telling us a heartwarming story.

Y'all are good folks...... and no, I don't want to trade even the job of cleaning the rabbit barn AND the hen houses for what you are going to be doing this afternoon.

A few things to think about what he told you.

1. A #4 egg is at the low end of the scale. You can find 4's a lot cheaper. Show me an eight.

2.Chickens have been imported from France legally and much more recently than 1900.

3. The French breed has the feathered legs not the English.

4. As Carla said, the Wade Jean line may be "hard to come by" but they are still the most common.

5. If people are paying the prices he quoted, that doesn't mean the eggs or birds are worth it. Especially if it is a number 4.

6. Why would anyone pay $5 bucks plus shipping a dozen for non fertile eggs?
I promise they won't taste any better than any other fresh egg just because they are from a Marans.

Those are very attractive ducks, according to the pictures I found. They are carried by Ideal Poultry.

Stromberg's, Meyer Hatchery and Murry McMurray have the blue Swedish ducks, but theirs are not crested. Those are the only catalogs I had to research. Minimum order of 20 ducks.

Edited to add: You might try contacting a feed store that will be ordering chicks and ducks anyway, like Atwoods, Lumber 2, any of the feed stores where you might have seen chicks last year, and ask if they will specifically order some in for you, so that you don't have to meet the minimum number for shipping. I don't know that the larger chains will do that, but suspect that smaller feed stores would be more accomodating. Call around.
