By the way - your/our cat, "Rattler" is doing great. He is going to be beautiful. I just need to get him to the vet and neutered before I let him roam around outside. My cats are all spayed, but don't know about those of the neighbors and don't want him to end up flat on the road from roaming to find a friend.

City I have decided against going the dual purpose rout. I will have lines for meat and a line for eggs, and while we may eat the eggs from the meat birds or the meat of the egg birds, those will not be their "purpose".

But to answer your question, City, we haven't yet entirely decided on a particular egg or a particular meat bird. We will be experimenting this spring with Cornish, Freedom Rangers, Buckeyes, and Delaware for meat, and with Marans and productions Reds for eggs. Might play around with another dark egg layer like Wellsummers.

I guess they will have to throw my response to the survey out. I filled it out, but I put my real zip code in. I agree that people should be able to own chickens in the city, but I'm not going to say that I live in their zip code if I don't.

I just don't mind the occasional white lie in the interest of a good cause, particularly regarding the overturning a stupid city ordinance. If they don't hear from people like me, then the majority will be from folks who likely have never seen a live chicken their entire lives except on TV.

If this fails, though, I am seriously approaching my representatives in the Oklahoma legislature to propose a ban on such nonsense.

By the way, I have one rougue rabbit running around that escaped about two months ago from the grow out cage. He/She looks healthy, but then the rabbit is also the only one on the loose. I will be curious to see whether it decides to tunnel under one of the storage sheds or the rabbit barn. It keeps returning to the rabbit barn, but stays just out of reach behind a row of cages when I am feeding.

Well it has been a horrible morning for me. I went to check on the bator that has 92 in it waiting to hatch tomorrow. I already had 39 in a tub that hatched last weekend. Well, went last night to move my babies into a much bigger oblong tub, gave them a fresh bed, clean water, a full jar of food, and a nice warm light to make them comfortable. They looked so cute in there.

When I went to check on the bator there sat the nice, clean, fresh, bed with 34 dead babies.

....laying in water soaked shavings. When my DH filled the water jar he hadn't gotten the lid screwed on right and it had continued to leak out, the whole gallon jar, and I assume because they were so wet, they got too cold and died.

On top of the dead babies sat 5 little ones just screaming.

I know it was just an accident but I had worked so hard to get those babies hatched. I had my standard blue cochins, polish, silkies, americanas, and welsummers in there.

All in the life of a chicken farmer. LOL

So, if you know of anyone that has standard blue cochins please let me know. I had ordered those eggs and for the life of me I can't remember where I got them.

I think I'm going to go clean out cages to just work of these feelings even if I feel like Mary Poppins out there in the wind. Ok, I'm through ranting. I guess I feel better.
