Okies in the BYC The Original

Well I just candled the eggs in the bator. Yeah I know its only been 2 days, but I wasn't looking for veins or anything. I was checking for exploders. I put eggs in that were a little old and I was doing a preliminary sweep to check for bad eggs. I'm glad I did becasue there were a dozen duck eggs that had dark spots. They should not have dark spots after only a couple of days. I pulled those and rearranged the others. I'm trying to make room in the bator as soon as possible to get more eggs in. I am going to work on a staggered hatch and keep going until I run out of eggs or cold weather sets in. By cold weather, I mean more snow in the forecast. That should (BETTER) be a long ways away. As soon as I get enough eggs to fill a rack, I'm gonna throw some quail eggs in.

You have found a wonderful group of folks who live in Oklahoma or wish they lived in Oklahoma.

We hope you will be able to join us May 1 at a get together at the KOA in Choctaw for a day of visiting, swapping and buying birds, eating, visiting, and laughing. For more information on the get together, check the signature line of Al517

Disclaimer: There are some folks in this group who are addicted to attending poultry auctions, hatching eggs, and acquiring poultry. Since addicts tend to be enablers, some of us may try to assist you in acquiring those same addictions

So, what kinds of birds do you have and what are you hoping to acquire?

Welcome to a very friendly group of folks who would love to help you acquire more poultry than you have pens to put them in.

We are coming into the final weeks before POOPS and I would like to get volunteers and topics for the displays finalized in the next few weeks.

If you would be willing to put together a display on one of the following topics, please send me a PM
1) Getting a bird ready to show and how to present it on the table
2) Cage assembly - including how to apply latch hooks so that you don't have to put on a second snap hook as a reinforcement
3) sexing young chicks by their wing feathers
4) another relevant topic in which you have expertise

Good Evening Folks!

Well sounds like everyone is alive and kicken today. I am down for the count at least for a day. Pulled a muscle in my back so bad it hurts to breath. Suck thing about it, is I do not know what I did to pull said muscle.

Reading post about organizing and leadership roles for POOPS and Okies BYC I just felt I needed to make a comment. Here is what I have found out about organizing a shindig like POOPS, people say they want to help but are not specific in what they are willing to do. I for one will honestly tell ya, I have a difficult time deligating work. Ask my assistant, he is always asking me what can he do to help and my answer is "I don't know. He has gotten real good at jumping in and taking the initiative to get the job done, he picks up where I leave off and I appreciate that more then I could ever express. This POOPS I am in charge of getting together activities and entertainment for the kids. Last POOPS I volunteered because there was a need and offered to help with this POOPS as well. Barnswallow has graciously offered to help and is probably doing more then I am in the organization of it. which I totally appreciate since I am hip deep in alligators so to speak right now.

For those who do not have something to donate (animal/item/monetary) time is always appreciated. Set up and clean up are just as important donations as items. I read that last POOPS enough money was raised to cover the cost of buying the meat but someone needs to cook it. We all know Al is the "Master" at the grill but even he needs a break. Maybe we could have a cook shift sign up sheet. Yes? This way everyone can contribute to the cause, cuz I totally understand wanting to carry some of the load.

With that said, I am going to make a statement with no intention of stepping on anyones toes or hurting anyones feelings but honestly the thought of Okie BYC (POOPS) becoming some organization kinda scares the peejeezers out of me. For those who have not already figured it out, I am a bit different and my squareness does not always fit in our round peg world. I have to deal with structure in my career and education and part of being a chicken owner is cuz I do not have to have structure, ifin I don't want ta. Plus honestly folks, if you are concerned about people taking us seriously, we better hope they never read this board because it does not take more then a couple of pages of posts to figure out we are a bunch of crazy chicken people. Which is totally why I love this board and spend hours, I really do not have to spend, reading post, crying over birds and people others have lost, feeling joy for the successful hatches or a desired chicken found, laughing at the jokes and over all silliness, you all are my peeps because we all have one thing in common "WE LOVE OUR BIRDS" (and you all know no one understands us who is not a part, well except maybe crack addicts "JUST KIDDING") .

So I have said my piece and counted to 10. Oh and I better get off this soap box too, while I am at it.

Love ya all!

Oh crud I just remembered. For all the kids who have shown animals, on the honor roll or have received an academic or sports award/s, need names, ages, what from the previous category did they participate in or recognition they received and the name of adult/s that claims said child/ren. I have some cool award paper I would be willing to drag out of the back of my closet to print up awards to honor our hard working POOPS kids.
Just send me a PM with said information. I will compile a list and start printing. The cut off date will have to be April 20th since I have finals the next week.
Thanks,

I appreciate this post greatly. I was under the impression (the impression I hade made in my noggin) that there would be tons of chicks and birds for sale. I do understand there will be a lot but I need to contact breeders if I am looking for specifics.

I am overwhelmed by the amount of poultry fanciers there are or have "come out of the coop". People usually give me a funny look when I say I have chickens, go figure.

Hey Darci! I agree with you - there are tons of poultry people out there! You are right - there will be lots of birds for sale at the POOPS auctions - the list that Smfamf/Shavon is keeping is a list of birds that will be available at POOPS for you to bid on. If there is something on that list you like, you'll have a chance at them.

At the bottom of Shavon's posted list are birds people are still looking for. If there is something specific you are looking for, you can ask on the board as always - perhaps someone on here has those birds for sale and they may respond via post or with a PM to let you know. Just because I'm curious - are you looking for something specific?

Hey There,

I was hoping for just a few of.....red and splash Silkies, I am on the request list now for Orloffs and MG Bantams. I'm keen to try out Brabanters too but I suspect they are too flighty for me, haven't even read about em just like the look of of em. I don't have a ton of room but I am keen to get back in the swing of things.

The MEat is already taken care of & being cooked.

I understand everyone has good intentions but the main things are already lined up for this year, please just volunteer to help in some area or stay for the after meeting & read the minutes after.

Edit to see cityclucks post on the next page.

Good MOrning all.... I for one love the "laid-back" way of BYC and POOPS. I don't care anything about having to keep up with paying dues, playing the populairity game for voting someone in, etc. I have to do enough of this in my everyday job. I don't want this to become like another one.

As far as I'm concerned this is just a bunch of folks like a family reunion getting together to have a wonderful time. We've been having a huge reunion in my family every year for years and we've never had to elect folks to do stuff.

Buster I know you are trying to help but if you haven't ever actively been involved in POOPS then you may not understand how we do things. We know the date for POOPS plenty in advance so we set the day aside as if it is a "family reunion"....which it is....our poultry family reunion. I understand things come up that can't be helped. My daughter worked my grandson's 1st birthday party around us coming to POOPS last fall. We were actually at POOPS on his birthday....of course he didn't know that. LOL

Everyone just pitches in and helps. You offer your help and someone's going to use you. We all come together and hug the snot out of each other
