We've got some CX that'll be ready about the same time we're looking forward to eating too.

I'm thrilled with the weather right now. Wish it could stay like this year round.

MM, we raise Black Ameraucanas for show and I can't tell you anything definitive from those photos. I know what sex these 2 are, but can you tell from these photos?

I couldn't tell 100% without handling them. Hatched May 16th, so just shy of 6mths.

Like Cuban Longtails said different lines develop differently as well. Here's a pic of one of the chicks I picked up from a breeder when I came down to POOPs, when was it...May 1st that was hatched a couple of days before. So different breeder, different lines, only 2wks older...betcha have no problem telling it's sex.

Joe - is the auction near Bentonville, Arkansas? I heard someone talking about a livestock sale near there a few months ago. It's about a 3 hour drive for me, so I'm not going to be able to make it this time. Let us know how it goes. Maybe it will be worth a road trip (truck pool?) next time.

An old-timer at a feed store schooled me on pubic bone placement. He checked the birds I had with me and was able to tell the sex of each accurately by examining the pubic bone spacing. Under the vent are two little pointy bones. A young pullet will usually only have about a finger width of space between the two bones. At point of lay the space will be closer to two finger widths. A mature hen laying well may have a space as large as three finger widths. He cautioned me to practice finding the pubic bones and measuring the space between by using what I knew for sure was a cockerel and what I knew for sure was a puttet. He explained that the spacing can change if a bird stops laying. He also said larger breeds may have larger spaces, so you have to compare Ameraucanas to Ameraucanas, not Ameraucanas to Jersey Giants. The old-timer told me that the closer to laying the birds are the more accurate the pubic bone spacing is for sexing birds. Maybe somebody else on the BYC has info about this. It might be worth a look.

It is my understanding that Pullets hold there tails straight up at almost a 45 degree angle. Obviously not a 100% marker for sexing as some pullets will have what they call droopy tail and you can getpoints deducted for that. Also the combs of true ameraucana's Develop the same as those of a buckeye or a Dark Cornish as true Ameraucana's Have pea combs. I have raised enough Pea comb type birds Now to know that I am gonna say 90% of these birds are roosters. Problem is I didn't even know true ameraucana's had pea combs. as everything I had before were hatchery stock and some had single combs some had pea combs some had god knows what combs. does any of this hold water? I will get some more Posted for here after I remember where I layed the camera down >.>
