Marybeth :
So you say...............
Be cautious approaching a group of bees that are homed within a small area. If the comb is being built from the bottom up instead of from the top down, be especially careful. Be aware that soapy water will kill bees when sprayed on them.

So assuming I can see the nest/hive and it is growing in the up position, That's bad right ??. And if I carry a soapy squirt bottle that might help right ??. Then start looking for the nest in areas close to the ground ??, cause sometimes I stack/pile excess building materials and they sometimes have lot's of little open areas to access, should I be concerned and go to over turning the pile or just burn it, allot of those materials I use on a regular basis around the farm, what would you do ??.

You have found a wonderful group of folks who either live in Oklahoma or wish they lived in Oklahoma.

We would love to help you find any and all poultry you are seeking, particularly if our friend "Sooner" will be involved in their care and feeding.

What kind of poultry do you have and what would you like to acquire?

I wouldn't burn building materials just because there is a nest of bees in them. I would however be cautious when disturbing a pile of building materials if you see bees flying in and out of them. Have an escape plan - like getting inside the cab of your truck with the windows rolled up - in case you run into the batch of bees determined to ruin your day.

Bees flying around and polinating trees and flowers aren't the ones that pose the danger. It is the nest of bees, where the brood is being raised, that creates the danger. Think mama bear defending her cubs. A European cluster of bees may sting you if they feel threatened, but they aren't going to come at you in waves.

If you regularly see large groups of bees, you might want to invest in a bee veil and wear long sleeves and gloves when you are working in the areas where the bees are located. Bee veils aren't that expensive and can be easily stored in your truck's tool box. Also, keep liquid Benadryl handy - it gets into your system more quickly than pills. Africanized bee stings aren't any more potent than regular bee stings - there are just so many more of them when they decide to attack.

Just use caution and be aware. You wouldn't burn materials just because there was a nest of rattlesnakes in them, you would instead use caution and protective garments to address the issue - just add an escape plan when bees are involved because they can move faster and travel greater distances more quickly than rattlesnakes.

I suspect that Lil'Sooner is much more responsible than others of that age group when it comes to careing for critters. We just need to be sure that all needs and wants are met for Lil'Sooner with regard to poultry.
