I have been worried about losing ours to the heat too. Plus we are caring for my aunts flock, and from looking at them, they are pretty old.
Every morning we have been using a spray nozzle on mist to wet down the coops, runs and chickens. We have deer netting over the tops of the runs so I run the hose while it is spraying over the netting so it gets everything and everyone while not spooking them. By misting in the morning it has time to dry before night.
Then in the heat of the day we put out 2 liters with water that has frozen solid in their most common resting areas. Finally, I put the 16 oz bottled water bottles that have frozen inside their waterers, it melts slower and keeps their water cool.

Of course all of our Naked Necks and Malays act like there is nothing going on, a little light panting and spread wings at the hottest times of day but it's the Silkies that I worry about the most but as of yet I haven't even seen them pant.

For the first time ever, and I hate to say it but, with all this horrible heat I am thankful that I don't currently have any chickens. I miss them so much, but this heat is awful! I'm so glad we brought Bun Bun inside early this year.

At Atwoods we sell ALOT of the standing misters, the ones you attach to hoses. And almost everyone is buying them for their dogs. It'd be worth a try for the birds. Here's a link just to show you what they look like: Cobra Mister

OMG!!! I found a completely free source of wooden pallets in Tulsa! And they have huge stacks of them.

I might be able to build my coop this summer, after all!

I just had to share this with everyone. It was sent to me in an email, and I don't know who the author was, but it sure is cute ... hopefully it doesn't offend anyone!

"John was in the fertilized egg business.

He had several hundred young layers (hens), called 'pullets,' and ten roosters to fertilize the eggs.

He kept records, and any rooster not performing went into the soup pot and was replaced.

This took a lot of time, so he bought some tiny bells and attached them to his roosters.

Each bell had a different tone, so he could tell from a distance, which rooster was performing.

Now, he could sit on the porch and fill out an efficiency report by just listening to the bells.

John's favorite rooster, old Butch, was a very fine specimen, but this morning he noticed old Butch's bell hadn't rung at all!

When he went to investigate, he saw the other roosters were busy chasing pullets, bells-a-ringing, but the pullets, hearing the roosters coming, could run for cover.

To John's amazement, old Butch had his bell in his beak, so it couldn't ring.

He'd sneak up on a pullet, do his job and walk on to the next one.

John was so proud of old Butch, he entered him in the Renfrew County Fair and he became an overnight sensation among the judges.

The result was the judges not only awarded old Butch the No Bell Piece Prize but they also awarded him the Pulletsurprise as well.

Clearly old Butch was a politician in the making.

Who else but a politician could figure out how to win two of the most highly coveted awards on our planet by being the best at sneaking up on the populace and screwing them when they weren't paying attention.

Vote carefully this year, the bells are not always audible".

Here's the link, but here is also what the ad says, since someone loves to flag all free pet ads, and it may be deleted before anyone can look at his picture. He looks adorable, and if I didn't already have the 2 female pyrenees pups, and 3 other dogs .... I'd be wanting him too!

Any one going to Newcastle on Sat. I have been doing a lookover at my chickens and think I may take a trio of 5 month old brahmas to the sale, I have decided to just have the layer flock and 3 breeder pen next year and thic cockerel is the one with the r rated name because he crows from 4 am on.

We too have too many roosters crowing early in the morning, but luckily the barn is far enough away from the house that I don't hear them until I go outside to let some dogs out of the house around 5 am. Hopefully my neighbors never complain.

A fence is the first order of business before I get a GP, and that won't come until the spring more than likely

But, how do you train them to protect your birds? I would imagine that it is something that is bred into them, but that they still need training for.

Does anyone know a website or some kind of information on this, or will I need to take him/her to a professional trainer?
